Maybe not dumb, but definitely overleveraged. The articles saying not to take 401k loans are alarmist tripe, but if you don't have an extremely stable job and a nice monthly cushion after you make the 401k payment and house payment I wouldn't do it. Don't forget that you'll want to furnish the house too, and there will always be shit you find after living in it that needs fixing

meh, if you're really that fucked, your income will be low enough that the tax penalty is NBD especially if you're in a high bracket

keep in mind the average BOOMER has like $15k when they retire

if you're well enough to travel, etc. whatever you imagine yourself doing with the money, you're well enough to work

I did it and lost my job roughly 3 months after. That sucked. But I was able to scrape together the funds to repay it on time. Now, four years later the return on my investment is like 300% and there's no way I'd be able to afford a place in my neighborhood at the current values. So i basically had the worst case scenario happen to me and it still worked out in the end.
