The articles saying not to take 401k loans are alarmist tripe, but if you don't have an extremely stable job and a nice monthly cushion after you make the 401k payment and house payment I wouldn't do it. Now, four years later the return on my investment is like 300% and there's no way I'd be able to afford a place in my neighborhood at the current values.
