Gas is $2.70 again. That's crazy inflation to me. $3 gas makes SUV sales plummet like a stone and we are 30 cents from that. High octane is already $3.

LJL kinda what I was getting at. I have a "high interest savings" (1.5%) and even that doesn't cover inflation.

Type in "current inflation" on Google and you get shady blogs as top hits.

Yes, if inflation were still calculated the way it was 50 years ago, the reported rate would be much higher

Food an gas make up a much smaller proportion of consumer spending that they used to.

Tons of new products and services are entering commerce and becoming cheaper with time.

Think of Uber versus Taxis.

CPA versus Turbo Tax.

Google versus hiring a reseacher.

Secretary versus computer.

$2000 cell phone in 1990 that could only make phone calles versus Iphone.

Real inflation is closer to 7-8% and has been for a while. Think about necessities like shelter and medical expenses. The only thing that's stayed the same is iPhone and consumer goods

The govt is hiding it

You might be right. I got a big mac meal the other day and it was $9. I went to panera last week and that was $14. This is MFH so I could be out of touch. I don't know. I remember lots of places shifting from "Dollar menus" to "Value menus" 2012-2016 but now lots of places are back running a very strong dollar menu.

Surprised to see XOers pissed at inflation. It kills debt and wipes away boomer savings. And given the massive public and private debt, inflation is basically a given.

I just paid two good battery cores and three pair of solid winter gloves for a 10 gal of gas, the quality of which seems suspect, though it’s working for now. This was in New Sedona. Last time I was round the area, about a year ago, you could get a 10 gal for maybe a core and a couple ration kits. Something is definitely going haywire with the prices of goods, at least where I’m located.
