Let's discuss the role of eunuchs in historical empires

Date: March 23rd, 2018 9:29 AM Author: aromatic area In Asia, there is a very long tradition of Emperors using eunuchs as advisors. The thought is, since a eunuch cannot found a new dynasty, a eunuch is less likely to rebel against you.
Especially in China and in the Ottoman Empire, there were times when the emperor's eunuch advisors basically ran the show. Poor families would beg the government to castrate their sons, so that their sons could live in palatial splendor as advisors to the ruler.
In the Ottoman Empire, an official called the "Chief Black Eunuch" was given the honor of guarding the harem. It was extremely important to keep men other than the Sultan out of the harem, it was the only way to be 100% sure that all the children born to harem women were children of the Sultan and therefore potential heirs.
Oddly enough, in the 1700's, there WAS a eunuch in Iran who overthrew the government and founded his own dynasty: he adopted a cousin or nephew as his heir. |

"Black Eunuchs", recruited from sub-Saharan Africa, guarded the harem and ensured that harem women slept only with the Sultan |

After all, the Sultan was in the harem a lot, and odds are the Chief Black Eunuch knew the Sultan's mother well. This is right around when the Byzantines hit their peak in the Middle Ages and were likely the strongest state in the world (I don’t know anything about China history) at this time.
