I saw Primus live at least half a dozen times in their heyday and they were never once the lead act at a major stadium. Always smaller venues and clubs and even universities. I think their biggest selling album was what, pork soda?

Metallica released their classic albums in the 80s. The Black Album (1991) was a huge pop hit but they spend the rest of the decade becoming irrelevant has-beens.

Pearl Jam only had one widely popular album (Ten) but then dropped its anthemic classic-rock style and settled into a smaller fanbase.

The albums after the black album were shit but their tours were ridiculous and they maintained a huge fan base throughout the entire decade. It wasn't until the 2000s the fans finally came to terms with the fact that they suck and will never make another good album.

Vs. occupied the number one spot on the Billboard 200 chart for five weeks, the longest duration for a Pearl Jam album. lolno. GnR and Metallica were HUGE at the same time as Nirvana and Pearl Jam were popular. Kids into rock music listened to all kinds of rock music and didn't ghetto themselves into "metal" or "alternative" or "grunge". The reason GnR and Metallica aren't the biggest bands of the 90s is 1) Their classic stuff was released in the 80s 2) Their popularity peaked around 1992 then quickly faded because they released nothing/shit after that.

Their popularity did not "quickly fade." Nirvana has a half dozen tracks that still get steady rotation. People still freak out over anything Kurt Cobain-related.

Metallica is an odd duck. Yes their best music was from the 80s, but they didn't become a rock institution until the 90s. I'm sure most people who have bought Master of puppets over the years bought it after the black album was released.

Btw, what do we mean here by "biggest"?

Some poasters seem to think it has to include the band's most influential work, whereas others think it's just a band selling out stadiums and selling lots of records and being really famous.

With Metallica for instance, their more highly regarded work was certainly in the 80s, but they were undoubtedly a bigger, more popular band in the 90s.

Nirvana if you're considering overall cultural impact, and it isn't close.

Also whoever said above they only had one popular album is a retard, In Utero and Unplugged both sold like 20 million copies.

In Utero and Unplugged both sold only 5 million each, hoss, and that was largely based on hype from Nevermind and Kurdt suicide.

Nirvana had "cultural impact" but not so much musical impact. People into music didn't care about the Kurdt Kobain death cult.

Wrong, Unplugged has sold over 19 million and In Utero over 13 million:

Also, they had plenty of musical impact, almost every band that hit it big from 1993-1997 was heavily in debt to Nirvana.

RHCP was the biggest band that had consistently decent to good releases throughout the whole decade. Also possibly Green Day or KoRn.

Foo Fighters is the most "90s" band

Blood Sugar Sex Magick (1991) was huge but then they released One Hot Minute (1995) which sucked and everyone wrote them off for most of the decade. In 1999 they released Californication and they got a second wind as a MOR rock band but that was more of a 2000s phenomena.

this is why in the other thread i think they were "bigger" in the 2000s. californication was every bit as big as BSSM imo, and stadium arcadium was also a huge album. couple that with the fact that they were so established and had both old and new fans and i think you can easily argue that their biggest decade was 2000-2009

Load and Reload (of shit) sucked and no one liked then, they were #1 because Metallica was coasting off the popularity of the Black Album.

People really forgot how before the internet destroyed the music industry how bands could sell absurd numbers of subsequent mediocre albums off the success of one good one (look at the sales figures for Ratt)
