There's no need to get all metaphysical. As I recall, he had found a drug regimen (Nardil etc.) that worked for him for twenty years. He decided, "yaknow, I don't like taking this stuff," so he went off it, slipped back into depression, and hanged himself.

I treat behavioral issues in the dogs of the rich using behavioral therapy, family systems analysis, and yes, if warranted, drug therapy. Regardless, here I am making a purely factual assertion: he had depression, it was treated successfully (by his account) for many years by a MAO-I, then he went off the MAO-I and soon after got depressed and killed himself.

But he didn't necessarily "get depressed" in the sense that might be assumed by that phrasing, ie, it could have been the depression he was experiencing was a severity caused by the discontinuation of the medication itself, and was not simply his otherwise natural depressive state

Cr, DFW had severe treatment resistant depression and the Nardil lifted him enough to allow him to write, but his output is clearly the product of a semi-pathological mind (although his journalistic pieces are pretty good imo). I believe he stopped taking Nardil after having a hypertensive crisis at a restaurant, and not long after fell back into depression and then subsequently tried to resume his pharma regimen to no avail. Really hits home that if you need to take these kinds of meds, you probably shouldn't stop because the underlying pathology is not something you ever really "get over".

Such trash. What all these people suffer from is a lack of people that care enough to listen to them and lack of connection. put a medicine bandaid on it if you want but don't pretend the cause of depression and anxiety is a "chemical imbalance". Absolute trash.

Even granting all that, you have not presented an argument against antidepressants in all cases, as not every depressed person has sufficient people who care enough to listen to and connect with them (whatever the effective dose of that may be), and the utility of antidepressants as a treatment bears no necessary relation to the cause of depression.

Which, listen man, I get. But I don't think the system does a good job trying even with 20 year olds. And I for the most part fail to see how medication will improve intergenerational psychological problems export to deficiently cover them up. The children won't get healthy coping strategies from hard won role models, for example, it seems to me.

What about people who get post-stroke depression (link below) - are they just suffering ennui and alienation?

My parameters are pretty clear. Your run of the mill Joe faggot who goes to counseling and gets pushed medication. Not old people, not brain damaged people. The regular people, especially the younger ones, that make up 80% of your take home pay. Even if their psychological problems are partly generic. The "they said they wanted to be happier so I gave them mind numbing pills after one visit" defense is bullshit.

I don't think your last sentence is a fair characterization. I tend to agree that antidepressants are often prescribed too freely. At the same time, many who could benefit from them do not get them. From what I know of his history, DFW seems to have had severe, recurrent major depression, as well as anxiety, such that his life was a living hell until he found a treatment regimen that worked for him.

Not fair? You sit across from someone in emotional pain and say "do you want a pill that will make you happier without having to do anything?" and if they just so happen to say yes you literally give them a 1 month free sample. Just enough, coincidentally, that they will become dependent. It's fucking ludicrous to now defend that by saying "if we didn't flood the market and medicate an almost order of magnitude more people than we needed to some fractional marginal patient would be missed." Its almost unequivocally clear that the marginal net benefit is beyond negative. And you sit in your office and pretend like this is a cool calculation you're making, when youre just following the fucking money.

I've never given someone pills because they said they wanted to be happier. That is what the drug dealer is for. And I think people should be making their own decisions about these things, except when they are incompetent for some reason. Your purported cost benefit analysis is contestable, and rests on ipse dixit. And your follow the money foam is odd, given that doctors don't (and legally can't) get kickbacks for steering patients to drugs.

You seem to me to be applying a moral way of thinking to a practical problem. Since you feel so strongly, I encourage you to volunteer at a psychiatric hospital or similar so that you can lend an understanding ear to MDD patients.

You're fucking insane. If 3% of people are depressed and 20% are on medication that cost benefit analysis isn't contestable. You might not get per unit kickbacks but plenty of you fucks take shady money. And I fail to see how this isn't a moral problem when half your patients are adolescents that you're teaching to have profoundly unhealthy relationships to their own mind so you can charge their insurance $500 for a 10 minute conversation and struggle to remember their name. You're shit and you don't even know it. That's the worst kind of shit.

It's true, when you use made up numbers and vague accusations based on your say so it is hard to contest. It is only when you are called upon to marshal evidence for your apparently strong opinions that you come up short.

This is a fairly unlettered view, but for sake of argument DFW had literally millions of people hanging on his every word. I don't think the issue is "a lack of people who care enough to listen."

It doesn't seem that you've ever engaged with the scientific literature on this subject, despite having a strong opinion. No need to get emotional.

Not sure how this relates at all to me saying that DFW and others with a history of treatment resistant depression should stay on their meds, or why you assume I'm a psychiatrist. Don't want to turn this into anymore of a subthread wasteland than it already is so I'm out.

he was a fucking junkie. he had the personality of a maudlin junkie, the gross habits, the deviousness etc. he was just a standard issue self-absorbed, shifty junkie, the kind you find at NA/AA by the the truckload, but he had 20 more IQ points and semi-intellectual pretensions

he was basically a literary Con Artist.

i'm not disagreeing but given these facts "DFW was a junkie (or had the personality of one)" doesn't seem anywhere near as damning when comparing him to other writers

but Dostoevsky was actually insightful.

David Foster Wallace is adolescent rubbish. everything he writes seems to be about the basic boring idea that he/his character is acting like a ***'fraud'*** or something. OMG, THESE PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THAT I AM, LIKE, TOTALLY NOT THE PERSON THEY THINK I AM. then a bunch of drawn-out punitively boring footnoted shit about tennis/twelve-step programs.

these are the preoccupations and formulations of a boring junkie.

i admit i have only read like 10 pages of him, and i refuse to read anymore.

Thanks for confirming with your last sentence because this entire thing is a retardedly facile take aimed more at the idea of his writing and what you think it represents than the writing itself.

He was a phenomenal writer and you need to stop being a flouncing homosexual.

it's just plain bad.

I'd locate the problem with DFW chiefly in an excess of verbal over non-verbal IQ such that he was left with nothing to furnish his rococo word palaces. That aside, his writing exhibits the solipsistic meandering that characterizes the insufferably depressed, and he never accumulated a store of life experience, or authentic knowledge of other people, as might compensate for sticking with him through his ceaseless Blair Witch circles of insecurity.

Also, thanks! re the poasting. I may be overly harsh on DFW because of insecurity; I see in him what I fear in myself. (Not that I've his talent). I have not read him for a really long time -- maybe I will give it another go at some point.
