please think this thru w me. The fund is a client and prob the top shop in my secondary city. I'm at back end v100 firm at below market pay, so the salary should be comparable. The billable hour is the bane of my existence.

Any reason not to go for it?

That's badass. You'll get to work on transactions with diverse assets, which makes deal work much less monotonous. Also, you might be able to develop some good tangential experience in areas like IP, clean energy, real estate, etc. that you can draw on later in your career. Go for it!

Thanks, but wouldn't my firm work put me closer to the action for IP/RE, etc, at least wrt the legal side? My current deal flow is pretty diverse

I wouldn't think so based on my experience, but maybe your firm is different. I got much wider exposure to areas outside of my specialty once I moved in house. In house lawyers at my PE clients seemed to have more diverse experience. If you ever want to make a move to the business side, this jump will be an important step in that direction.

Massive group, multiple funds, no concern about their performance.

More curious if this is worthwhile for upside or work life balance

What are the longterm risks to their business? How does that compare to a firm?

What opportunities for advancement? Do you want to practice law forever or move to business side? Opportunities for that?

Fund is prestigious and doing well. Firm is chill and could make partner if I can keep my billing up (prob can't tho, may burn out)

Would be secure if I perform at the fund. Would love to move to the business side but don't see how I could, no business background

I've moved to the business side without the background. In my experience, in-house places are far less concerned about your resume than firms. They care about what you can do.

I do it, I kind of like it. It’s steady work and if you have good precedents not terribly labor intensive. You’ll use a law firm for it so they’ll do most of the shit stuff. You’ll just ha e to learn basic structure stuff to be able to understand what each fund needs to do slightly differently/sign off on what you’re giving investors in side letters.
