I also got in way better shape and made a variety of other life improvements so the time to make an attempt is now.

Dating -- not just online dating, but all dating -- is undignified in the sense that it requires honesty and vulnerability with strangers. But hey it's also undignified to be a fucking fatass and start losing weight and get in shape, but you already did that. You can do this too.
Here is the main protip I learned from xo that helped me (aside from get in shape and learn how to dress). It did not come easy to me because it was not my personality, so I had to deliberately work on it.
- Be assertive. An xoer recommended a GOAT tip to me regarding messaging on dating sites: ask for a date in your third message. First message: intro with some comment or question about their profile that gives them something to respond to. If they have any flicker of interest, they'll respond with an answer to your comment. Second message: keep the conversation going, hopefully you get another response. Third message: "hey that's really interesting and you seem super cool. Rather than continue typing these long messages, let's meet on Saturday afternoon for coffee, maybe 3pm at ___? My cell is ___, what's yours?" ...this was a GREAT protip because it forced us both to make a decision. Oh and if a girl is willing to engage in extended conversation with you on a dating site, she's probably willing to meet you, so just ask. Being assertive carries over into the dating world itself but if I were you I'd focus on talking to some of these girls first and asking them out, then xo can advise from there.
Side note: If you have a sarcastic, self-deprecating personality and dislike idle chitchat like I do, recognize that is something of a crutch from your non-relationship days and is a barrier to getting to know a girl. You'll find girls who share your interests, but sometimes you also have to sit around and bullshit about the weather or pop culture or whatever.

Send your thoughtful intro message, then move onto the next one. This part can be disheartening if you start worrying about why any individual girl doesn't write back. I thought of it like a modified shotgun approach. It isn't useful to send "hey girl" to 200 chicks a day, but it's also not realistic to spend 2 days crafting a message for a dream girl and getting over invested. Gotta keep in mind some girls on there are just enjoying the ego boost of collecting tons of messages all day, some are getting into relationships already, some are flaky and never log in, some are mentally ill catfish, etc etc etc. Do your general pre-screen, then get messaging.
