Went to law school to be a prosecutor and / or to get rich. Have sleptwalked my way through 5 years of biglaw lit because of student loans / risk aversion. Hate the work, people are ok, but have zero interest in any of my work except my pro bono stuff when I get to actually argue in court and stuff.

Anyway, got an offer to go in-house. Better work life balance, but not a ton better. 150kish. Probably more interesting work but even further away from the work I want to be doing. I’d never see a courtroom.

Have about 50k loans left, and I refinanced so it’s about $1k per month. Even so, I’m on the verge of applying to every federal and state prosecutor position I can find. I feel like it’s now or never. I feel like getting in court and putting bad guys away is the only thing I would enjoy, but I know it’s going to be hard to take a 80% paycut.

Advice?

prosecutorial work is a calling though, none of us can advise you on that kind of life move except that you should have a nest egg from BIGLAW to help pay for life when you're making like 80K

Ya that was kind of my feeling too. But SAHM plus 2 kids and loans = basically no nest egg. But I’ve been using that excuse forever now.

i didn't like being a prosecutor.

to me, it didn't always feel good being essentially a cop.

and if you lose, you feel like you let everyone down -- the victims, witnesses, etc. very bad feeling.

i hated that pressure. especially because often the witnesses fuck you over on the stand, and then they don't recognize it was their fault, they just think you blew it.

TY. I feel like that pressure would motivate me to do good work. Right now all I feel is endless pressure that I’m going to fuck up some little detail that’s actually a big deal

the crim justice system is a scam...go do civil litigation instead--debt collection is easy to get into...and you can prolly make as much as a veteran DA

I say get that prosecution job now. You can always move back into lit in a year or two if you don't like it.

Don't jump at the first offer, though. Make sure it's the right office. Some USAs/DAs are batshit crazy and working for them is hell. Others are awesome and its a pretty chill way to do good work in your community.
