Took a week to finish this book, which wasn't a great pace, but I was distracted by a short vacation last weekend, an unfortunate medical issue, and Krampusnacht driving me into the unpleasant world of online dating bullshit.

SSC has a pretty good review/summary/exhaustively long rant about Red Plenty here:

http://slatestarcodex.com/2014/09/24/book-review-red-plenty/

Overall, it was a pretty good book, and highly unusual. It's basically a book about why the USSR economy failed, but instead of being a work of nonfiction, it's a short story collection, mixing up real events with a few fully fictional stories that attempt to illustrate the failed incentives of the Soviet regime. Some reviewers, like SSC above, interpret the book as a look at how Communism might have succeeded with slightly braver leadership, but I didn't get that impression. Instead, the main takeaway was the sheer impossibility of having a centrally-controlled command economy quickly meat the millions of small variables, incentives, and exchanges of information that allow a free economy to function and grow.

Also because of the short story function there's totally a subplot where a hot Komsomol teen gets seduced by a law Chad, not flame.
