I'm reading a book like 90% of the time (or these days, a kindle). But take a look at your fellow passengers-- 90% of them are just staring straight ahead doing nothing. They're not thinking deep philosophical thoughts, they're just meat robots marching through life.

You can also see this crop up with your prole friends and relatives who have no ability to plan for an expense (and I had a CGWBT who was that way too). The six month premium for car insurance or whatever isn't an event that's even planned for; it's just something that happens to them and if they have the money great, if not they'll deal with it when the bill comes in. In extremis, this is why people on food stamps both eat steak and run out of money before the month ends (hence Wal-Mart and such being packed on food stamp day). The idea that they'll need to eat at the end of the month, just like they did last month, never crosses their mind.

This is indeed a disturbing universe.

just think of all the media which references people thinking about shit. almost any work of fiction, I love lucy, the entire concept of "angsty teenagers", etc. fucking anything. the VAST MAJORITY of people have an internal monologue, even those who are profoundly stupid. their internal monologue just also happens to be stupid.

I suspect the leddit idiots are misinterpreting the term, they might think others think literally about everything they do, in words ("I am typing", "I am eating", "my left foot just advanced in front of my right, then the right in front of the left" etc) and that's what internal monologue means
