corolla needs 3 new tires replaced. i got a flat a year ago and the 4th is quite new. current tires are all goodyear (same model as on the car).

should i replace the 3 tires with a cheaper tire like a kumaho, or do all 4 tires need to be the same?

i'd use the fourth as a full-size spare, but it shouldn't be too big of a problem to have a used tire, just make sure you rotate them all regularly

does your corolla have 4x4 or AWD? -- i dont think so.

no need to be the same size from front to back, but each set should be the same for benefit of tires, driver, and car.

also i assume by size you mean slightly different sidewall height or slightly different widths not boggers v. low profiles

They either have to be designed for different size tires or have the same diameter. You are listing width.

I had to figure out if they would fit my car. They were off a turbo.

I have also done some (potentially) colossally unsafe shit to save money. Like using vice grips to clamp off a broken brake hose and then drive home or drive with a rigged hand throttle etc. to save the tow costs. Or the junkyard parts and hi-lift and chain accident repair of my GF’s car. Align my cars with string and a tape measurer. Mount my own tires. Weld frames and suspension parts. Swap a water pump on the side of the interstate.

I mean one mismatched tire is not a big safety issue. In fact, the main concern I would have is that it is slightly different diameter and could cause premature wear on the differential in the transaxle which is why I suggested if you do it, you put them on the non-drive axle.

If your car pulls to one side or shakes like a dildo on the highway you need an alignment. Should also be done every time you change the tires or have suspension work done.

The easiest way to tell is if your car handles funny (pulling to one side even though tire pressures are correct) or you get unusual tire wear.

There is absolutely nothing that alignment has to do with changing tires. Except of course if they are worn in an unusual way which is merely evidence of a bad allignmemt. Allignmemt with new tires is GC flame to get you to pay for an allignmemt when you get new tires.

Whether you need an alignment is independent of the tire replacement issue (unless the tire shop is beating the shit out of your car).

Typically:

- When suspension work is done that moves things around.

- When you hit something hard.

- After a significant amount of mileage.

YES. Look for Firestone coupons. Once in a while they do $50 off $150 service. Then cop the $169.99 lifetime alignment for $119.99 (basically the cost of 2 full price alignments) and get your alignment done every 6 months for the life of the car.

also hold onto your receipt for this because i just caught goodyear trying to jew me on this by every place claiming "we're independent" and that they can't look up my record of getting the 3-yr alignment service so i had to call around to figure out which place did it before because i don't have my original paperwork and it was out of town

This is actually a pretty complex question. It depends what you mean by "need."

What's your budget?

How long do you plan on keeping this car?

What is brand, model, and current mileage of the newer, 4th tire?

budget is not wasting money. it's a 2013 corolla w 35k miles. new tire probably has 10k miles on it. will drive car into ground.

I'm going to assume you have 16" 205/55 tires. And it looks like the OEM tire is the Goodyear Eagle RS-A, which has a tread wear rating of 260 (relatively low) and no mileage warranty.

That suggests that 10,000 miles of wear on the one tire is going to be significant. I'd guess roughly around 1/4 of the tire's life.

Here are some alternatives from reputable manufacturers that are reasonably cheap and will likely last longer:

Sumitomo HTR Enhance L/X (90,000 miles)

Yokohama Avid Touring S (65,000 miles)

Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum (60,000 miles)

But your tires are already about as cheap as they get, so I'd say you should just get four tires and find the price and type of tire that works for you. Tirerack.com is good for researching that.

Not ideal, but of course not. The spare is usually a tiny donut and (not recommended) I've seen people drive on them for long periods of time. So even that extreme example is fine at least for short term. A different brand of the same size should be fine, and will probably wear such that it is functionally the same.

Just get 4 new tires, don't mix them. If you had 2 mixing would be ok but I wouldn't want tires on the same axle with differing amounts of wear.

Is there really that much different in tire price between Kuhmo and gooddyear on a Corolla? (14" wheels?)

Most Corollas from that year have 16" tires, but they're reasonably cheap. There are tons of respectable tires around $80. The no-name brands have tires around $50.

Don't forget to look at Cooper. I've been super happy with my CS5s and the price was right.

They don't have to be. If you look closely at this car, you can see the back tires are a touch larger than the front, and it seems to be driving fine.

Nope. See how that back tire is wrinkly? That's because it's having a hard time keeping up with the more nimble front tires.

Cr. OP, please note that the Corolla is a front wheel drive vehicle, so you'll need to put the big tires up front.
