When I think of my life, I absolutely see this as the case. In the early 90's I had a choice to go to a lower Ivy at full price (which would have meant debt) versus an unknown STEM speciality school 100% free (arguably I was ahead some years when I worked on campus). Conventional wisdom was LOLWUT, why would you turn down famous school X for unknown Y. Well, doing that allowed me to graduate NODEBT, which enabled me to move to an emerging tech city without the burden of needing much if any sort of salary. That kind of nopaycheck freedom + a college friend in the same town led to my first 7-figure VC funding when I was about 23. So, I was able to get ahead early in life and subsequently stay ahead / compound it.

Was I lucky? Sure. Did I create the situation for luck to occur? You're damn fucking right I did, I turned down low risk / near certain UMC career paths an Ivy would have provided me for earlier financial freedom that allowed me to coast on minimal money long enough to develop product, raise funding, etc. I think it's that latter point people don't get. Unless you're from a bunch of family money, a top tier and costly degree might get you UMC, but don't expect to be able to take the sort of aggressive moves to actually strike it rich. Enjoy prestige, enjoy access to comfortable jobs and salaries, but the trade off is that career wise you're running the fucking football versus being able to take some shots deep.
