Kids were frequently paddled in school and there actually was a truant officer who tracked down anybody who didn't show up.

Guns were in most homes, as many people hunted, and you could buy pistols and rifles at the hardware store and from Sears via mail order. Dynamite was also for sale at the hardware store, but they usually wouldn't sell it to kids unless they were pretty sure your parents actually had a use for it (commonly used for stump removal). I remember when the school banned guns from lockers and kids had to keep them in their cars - mostly .22 rifles and .410 shotguns. Nobody ever got shot. Fist fights were the preferred method of settling disputes. We had a place on the school ground in junior high (1959-61) - a big sand pit- where fights were conducted after having been arranged earlier in the day. No teachers or administrators ever bothered us. There were fights about once/week which drew spectators. A really serious grudge might be settled at the levee by the river at night, with a crowd to watch, of course. No knives, guns, or anything except fists. If two of us got into a confrontation at school it was common for the coach to give both guys boxing gloves and let us go at it. We were required to take boxing and wrestling in PE. We never got much instruction, but certainly pounded away on each other with enthusiasm. Boxing was considered "manly," and my dad taught me a little and encouraged me to deal physically with bullies. After I knocked one guy down the stairs at school I was never bothered again. Teachers looked the other way. It was just part of being a kid.

Mental disorders (other than plain old retardation) did not seem to have been invented yet - no mass murderers in my area. I knew several hundred kids, and while some of them went on to have trouble later in life, nothing even remotely bad happened during school years. We all learned to read and write, even the 70 I.Q. guys.

At the time I thought life in Are Country sucked, but now it seems 180. Or 800 back in the day... Maybe I am just getting old and afflicted with rose colored cataracts.

He went away I think during sophomore year but eventually came back. He then almost immediately impergnated this sweet white girl with curly blonde hair. So also was responsible for the first (and one of a very few) pregnancies in my HS.

He was in my gym class one year. When we played baseball, he insisted on batting one handed. We all laughed at him until he started bombing homeruns with one hand.
