But gets benefits, pension, lots of days off. That's a low salary though, esp for a tech job. Most gov't jobs pwn private ones nowadays anyway (didn't use to be the case) but tech pays better in private workforce.

Most good tech companies have good benefits, stock options, health care. Fed FERS is a shit pension...not worth that low salary

A CS grad could get a job with lots of days off and nice fringe benefits with a much higher salary

many years ago I applied to a patent examiner position, and then later withdrew my app, and then they emailed me and said, 'oh, we were gonna hire you'...bullshit

Weird that the job title is actually “Computer Scientist”. The description reads like your standard IT/Engineering jerb.

as a patent agent working for a company I crossed paths with these guys--many of them are foreigners who barely speak english...their responses often were word salad consisting of copy and paste documents that sometimes made little sense...

A lot of those guys work from home a majority of the time, so if you're in a low COL area it's not bad.

Also, if you want to be a patent attorney, having a few years as an examiner is great. I know several folks who did a few years as an examiner, went to a mediocre LS (not true TTTs, but lower T1 and T2)--often on at least partial scholarship--and then did biglaw or one of the "boutique" IP firms like Fish, Finnegan, or the like.

yea, but after 10 years in the industry a CS worker is basically obsolete and out of a jerb, because he's only managed to master java 6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,13.5, 18... when the industry is on java 28

meanwhile the PTO guy... he's churning $160k working at home and 8 weeks of vacation, sick time, plus pension guaranteed.

PTO guy wins in this case, it's all about that low wage compounding, and annuity into perpetuity

In this progression, GS14 would probably make 130K at the most.
