The first one was about a decaying cabal of rich families with a history of conspiring in murder and child rape. In the second one the rape, murder, and corruption was still ongoing and unresolved at the end. The real difference was the atmospheric menace hanging over season one suspended by rust's depressive realism. There was a suggestion of supernatural horror to go with the dark metaphysical stuff. The second season suffered by trying to marry the philosophical occultism of the first season with an L.A. Chinatownesque sense of the futility of earthbound corruption.
