i think the players themselves are competitive and love to win and they value overall title count more than the "analysts" and the fans do. my theory is that just being in the winner's circle of a no-name tourney carries a lot more weight to the players than how overall titles is evaluated when guys are compared.
gasgay has 15 singles titles (all 250s), and has never gotten to a slam final and is career high #7.
how many of these singles titles would he give up for a slam final or top 5?

i think American fans in particular are fixated on only the biggest title possible.
like for example, nobody in the USA cares about a team that finishes first during the regular season if they don't win the championship, even though objectively being the best team during the season is a huge accomplishment.
ditto trading 4 world championships for an olympic gold.
