What's the longest that a team could theoretically control a player?

My understanding is that it's 14 years:

5 years in minors and not on 40 man roster

3 more years in minors but on 40 man roster (using all 3 of his options)

3 years in majors (can't option him to minors though) getting minimum salary

3 years getting arbitration.

This seems too long. Am I missing something in step 2?

Nope. When you call a player up the clock starts ticking towards free agency. Step 2 basically doesn't exist

I thought they had to have 6 years of 25 man roster service time to get free agency. Would the 3 years on the 40 man roster but optioned to minors count as service time?

That would make it 11

I'm a yuge fan of your posting brother but I don't think this is correct. Everything I read says they need 6 years of 25 man roster service time

he's right

but player can be in minors for seven years before having to be added to the 40 man, not five

edit: service time doesn't begin when added to the 40-man roster, for that you have to be added to the 25-man. but after seven minor league years the player has to be added to the 40-man or released. just extends your time in minor league status.

So then that would make it 16 years?

7 minor league years, 3 40 man roster years using all options, 6 major league years

well you could be put on the 40-man and just not called up. but your minor league contract would expire at some point. major league control starts once your contract is purchased from the minor league club but minor league free agency exists for those who don't make it.

so after the initial seven years you don't get "3 40-man roster years using all options," you'd become a minor league free agent unless the team promoted you to the 25-man, at which point the 6-year clock starts.

This seems right. Thank you. So if after 7 years you aren't on 25 man roster you are a free agent?

What if they take you off 25 man roster for a year and you spend a year in minors. Does that still count as service time?

yes. and if you're on your second (or greater) minor league contract and get put on the 40-man your base salary is like $80k or something like that so they do ok all things considered at that point. and not much incentive for a team to keep a minor leaguer around just to leave him on the 40-man in perpetuity anyways.

it doesn't count as service time unless it's for injury rehab while on the major league DL.
