Anyone ever heard of this? An acquaintance who worked as an AUSA in a pretty hardcore district (Think Detroit/Newark/Baltimore) was transferring to a flyover district and commented that he would no longer have to carry a gun at work anymore.

Do they issue guns to some AUSAs? Seems a bit odd.

I've known AUSAs who carry, but never heard of a USA requiring the AUSAs in their office to carry. The ones I know carry their own firearms.

A friend of mine's sister worked in a rural DA's office in Indiana where she was issued a firearm and required to carry when she started working there. I thought that was odd.

I highly doubt it's a personally owned firearm with this guy.

I'd be interested in knowing how DAs or AUAs get the privilege to carry beyond what an ordinary citizen would with a CCW; my assumption is they're basically just easily granted a CCW like an ordinary citizen and are technically bound to the limitations of it, just that cops/etc. wouldn't actually enforce a violation (e.g. if the DA carried into a bar, etc.)

I was LE in college and pre-swearing I could carry like an ordinary citizen w/in the bounds of the state laws (gun loving open carry state). Post-swearing, then I could carry open or concealed, into a bar, etc. At the time it was during the "assault weapon ban" so pre I couldn't legally buy hi-cap mags, post I was able to buy mags that were labeled as "LE Only".

At minimum a DA or AUSA would have to take some sort of firearms certification to be able to carry at work, I seriously can't imagine they would just toss them gun and say go for it w/ respect to how to operate it, when it's appropriate to unholster, use deadly force, yell "get on the ground motherfucker", etc.

i have something similar. its a special endorsement on the license. by statute i can carry "anywhere" except alcohol establishments, private places that properly sign against it, and federal jurisdiction areas.

i can carry in the courthouse (i dont)

i can carry in a school (i dont)

i can carry to the airport's TSA line (i don't) but not past it.

etc etc etc

i never took a class, i had the local training officer sign a certificate that i was "proficient" with firearms and that was that.

ADAs here have to get a CCW permit - like anyone else - if they want to carry, but then they can carry everywhere LE can except in the courtroom or statehouse.
