Buy quality hardwood from a local exotic lumberyard - mahogany, maple, walnut, cherry - and finish with polyurethane. Home Depot and Lowes have shit prices on quality wood.
To unsophisticated buyers, the oak and maple sold at HD and Lowes appears, at first glance, to be priced far lower than the local exotic lumber supplier, but their prices are always far higher. This is because they sell hardwood lumber by the linear foot, rather instead of how lumberyards price their goods, which is by the square foot (board foot). Last time I compared, HD was about twice the price of my local hardwood supplier. |
