Absolutely. You don't have to be religious to study religion. I always got As in theology but have been atheist/agnostic since I was quite young.

All the religions around today are extremely flawed. A learned man should address this important matter on his own

Depends on a lot of things. Your culture, values, family history, etc. It is a bit like choosing a family. I would ask yourself what you want your children to grow up as (which, for us, is primarily the focus).

hmm seems like studying theology is different than being theological. it world be weird to say i study philosophy but im not philosophical, unless i was an historian of philosophy. in that case i'm not philosophical. similarly a scholar of theology isn't theological. to be theological requires some commitment to the veracity of the theology you're studying. it seems commitment to veracity of theological propositions makes you de facto religious.

Definition of theological

1 : of or relating to theology

2 : preparing for a religious vocation a theological student

You could study theology without having any religious beliefs whatsoever.

right and I'm suggesting that someone that studies the history of theology isn't in a relationship with theology itself. a relationship with theology itself demands the elicitation of certain cognitive responses that would be unavailable to someone approaching it neutrally or historically.

You can come to conclusions on what theologies are more "correct" based on a number of factors that have nothing to do with your personal faith. Which is how I was able to get As in every single theology class I ever took.

right so you're still talking only objectively/neutrally/intellectually. im suggesting you can't be properly theological without certain non-rational cognitive states, even if theology is to a large extent rational architecture

My teachers generally had no idea what my true beliefs were (by design) and many even praised my faith, conviction and "clarity of thought" (this one always made me snicker internally). So I'm going to disagree with this.

you're leaning pretty heavily on a pedagogical argument that doesn't seem relevant to the definitional question

i guess to put it more clearly: getting A's in theology classes doesnt a theologian make

Theology is the study of religion. Theological means that which relates to theology. Therefore, how could it be irrelevant?

I should've said dispositive, not relevant.

In any case i guess it's just humorous to think of some moron walking around calling himself theological without believing a lick of it.

E.g. I'm scientific but chemistry is a load of crap
