I wanted to like the CRV after xo's reviews, but it really seems like a small minivan. The interior is not bad and the cargo space is good (which makes sense as a minivan).

The outback maybe has less cargo space because the back of the CRV is so high, but that wont be useful laying down most large items in the back. Outback seems much bigger.

Outback has more features and drives a little better. The main con for the outback is the CVT is annoying and it feels like the car cannot accelerate even when you floor the gas - which is annoying for a 2.5L engine. I rented a Subaru Legacy this past weekend with the same engine and trying to pass cars on the highway was a bit annoying. The CRV uses a turbo 1.5L engine which feels like it has more pick up, but also is loud as fuck while accelerating. It really is like a civic dragging around a minivan.

I guess the outbacks costs a little more. Both have great gas mileage, but the CRV has a 13 gallon tank while the outback has an 18.5 gallon tank which makes a big difference.

Also Subaru is offering 0% down and 0% financing for 48 months. Fucking Honda, even for top tier credit, can only do 3.9% financing for the LX (base model). They can't even tell me the interest rate for the nicer EX-L model, probably 4.9% which would force me to buy all cash.

Leaning to the outback. This is to replace my wife's prius which I fucking hate. We also test drove the audi Q5, which was nice but nothing special. Interior was a little disappointing.

What's the deal with the financing variance? Is it hyperlocal or do the car companies have really volatile loan placement on the back end?

Was the same thing last year when we bought a car at the same time as my sister in law and they bought a Honda and got 0% for a while and then 0.9 for the rest of their loan and Toyota wouldn't offer any better than like 2.5% depsite my 800 credit score. But when I got my previous Toyota they were offering 0% out the ass. Pissed me off and I keep looking for a decent CU deal to move my loan but the rates haven't come down because the Fed and now Trump's tax cut.

yeah got the prius at 0 down 0% also.

I feel like any APR over 2% is an insult for shitty jap cars for 800+ credit. And I am not going to let Honda of Santa Monica give me a hard credit inquiry to tell me their offer's suck.

schtick aside, in all honesty the Subaru Outback, the Honda CR-V, and even the Mazda CX-5 (which I vociferously denounce on this law bort) are all great cars and you can't really go wrong with any of them

I decided to go with the CR-V because as a new parent it fits my specific use case the best: it has a ton of room in the back seat for the carseat and, if we are blessed with another child, two carseats. My wife and I would certainly agree with you that the Outback "drove better" but that was simply not an important consideration for us.

what I do like about honda is they dont try to fuck you with 100 different features and options. There are a few classes and you just get the EX-L.

Acura let us take an MDX home for the weekend. Confirmed to the wife to stick with the slightly smaller but more modern RDX. We have had our current one 99% trouble free (had a window regulator go, hence why they gave us the MDX to drive) for 12 years and the new 2019 is super refined + has a version of the Civic Type-R motor in it.

Also, consider 'luxury brands' if only for the dealer service aspect of things. I take our cars to a private mechanic and his friends who do cash work, but the one time taking her car into the dealer I had zero issue getting them to toss the keys to a loaded, $50k+ car to drive for a few days. That may happen at Subaru or Honda, but I'd wager much less likely.

Agreed - I was going to steer her to the SQ5 to pair with my S4, but after checking out the RDX there is nothing the Audi is offering, aside from the more powerful engine, that to me justifies the considerable price tag lift. She's not going to care if the car has 280 or 350HP, and I'm pretty confident that Honda motor is an excellent mill which will have huge aftermarket given the models it's shared with.

Ignore for a second that the 2019 RDX is on every metric way more car than a CR-V, more than justifying the price difference, not having to fuck around with scheduling (oh, you have a problem, come right in!) or needing to suck off a service manager for a loaner (understandably, this con is a pro for some on here) is worth it.

Because the CRV is TTT through and through so as a consequence you wind up with more interior space. SH-AWD, drivetrain robust enough to support 272HP, active dampers, better sound deadening a stereo system, better seats, stiffer chassis; all that shit eats into interior space.

Compared to the Q5, X3, and XC60 the 2019 is on par or better than it's peers in cargo space.

VW in general uses parts that seem identical to Audi/Porsche platform mates but in many cases are lower quality components (eg cast vs forged control arms, cheaper plastics, etc.) Things like wiring harnesses in the Cayenne are higher quality than in the Touareg.

Bottom line, if you can afford it, avoid the VW model if Audi or Porsche have an alternative. In this case, I’m thinking it’s the Q3.

The only problem with VWs over Audis is the TTT fuel injection system on the VWs. Cast v. machined is BS unless you legit tow 5000 pounds on the reg. You are never putting anything on your commuter car under the kind of pressures where it will matter.

The CR-V is faster and has 10% more cargo space, but because of the shitty transmission it feels like a minivan despite having more power. The Mazdas are also simpler and should be more reliable in this generation.

I assume you are aware that 2019 is the last model year for this “generation” of Outbacks and the new generation of outback’s should roll out in summer 2019 (for 2020).

Meaning the new model will be on subaru’s Superior “global platform” and will contain a new engine and a number of other features.

This is at least part of the reason Subaru is offering 0% financing, along with the fact that the 2019 should roll out to dealers around the end of this year.

You should def check out credit union rates, many will also handle purchasing the vehicle for you and get fleet pricing.

I'm not suggesting they are bad quality or unreliable, it just feels sluggish. the car comes standard with lots of features, is great in the snow, comfortable to sit in, plenty of cargo space etc.

One thing to consider if your wife is a less than 180 driver is braking distance. Hondas in this generation stop about 10 feet sooner than all other cars. 120 feet v. 130 feet from 60mph. That's actually a lot. Honda is religious about braking distances.
