I wanted to like the CRV after xo's reviews, but it really seems like a small minivan. The interior is not bad and the cargo space is good (which makes sense as a minivan).
The outback maybe has less cargo space because the back of the CRV is so high, but that wont be useful laying down most large items in the back. Outback seems much bigger.
Outback has more features and drives a little better. The main con for the outback is the CVT is annoying and it feels like the car cannot accelerate even when you floor the gas - which is annoying for a 2.5L engine. I rented a Subaru Legacy this past weekend with the same engine and trying to pass cars on the highway was a bit annoying. The CRV uses a turbo 1.5L engine which feels like it has more pick up, but also is loud as fuck while accelerating. It really is like a civic dragging around a minivan.
I guess the outbacks costs a little more. Both have great gas mileage, but the CRV has a 13 gallon tank while the outback has an 18.5 gallon tank which makes a big difference.
Also Subaru is offering 0% down and 0% financing for 48 months. Fucking Honda, even for top tier credit, can only do 3.9% financing for the LX (base model). They can't even tell me the interest rate for the nicer EX-L model, probably 4.9% which would force me to buy all cash.
Leaning to the outback. This is to replace my wife's prius which I fucking hate. We also test drove the audi Q5, which was nice but nothing special. Interior was a little disappointing.

schtick aside, in all honesty the Subaru Outback, the Honda CR-V, and even the Mazda CX-5 (which I vociferously denounce on this law bort) are all great cars and you can't really go wrong with any of them
I decided to go with the CR-V because as a new parent it fits my specific use case the best: it has a ton of room in the back seat for the carseat and, if we are blessed with another child, two carseats. My wife and I would certainly agree with you that the Outback "drove better" but that was simply not an important consideration for us.

Acura let us take an MDX home for the weekend. Confirmed to the wife to stick with the slightly smaller but more modern RDX. We have had our current one 99% trouble free (had a window regulator go, hence why they gave us the MDX to drive) for 12 years and the new 2019 is super refined + has a version of the Civic Type-R motor in it.
Also, consider 'luxury brands' if only for the dealer service aspect of things. I take our cars to a private mechanic and his friends who do cash work, but the one time taking her car into the dealer I had zero issue getting them to toss the keys to a loaded, $50k+ car to drive for a few days. That may happen at Subaru or Honda, but I'd wager much less likely.

I assume you are aware that 2019 is the last model year for this “generation” of Outbacks and the new generation of outback’s should roll out in summer 2019 (for 2020).
Meaning the new model will be on subaru’s Superior “global platform” and will contain a new engine and a number of other features.
This is at least part of the reason Subaru is offering 0% financing, along with the fact that the 2019 should roll out to dealers around the end of this year.
You should def check out credit union rates, many will also handle purchasing the vehicle for you and get fleet pricing.

my wife drives a 2016 outback. i love it but agree the engine and transmission are the low points.
somehow i find it less boring than the crv.
