Trump was woefully unprepared for the questions regarding the Muller indictment and Russian interference in the election. Combined with his poor communication skills, Trump's statements were an embarrassment. 2. This however does not equate in any way to treason. Trump's actual policies towards Russia have been tough, and I discussed this in an earlier post. 3. Comparing the press conference to Pearl Harbor/JFK assassination/9-11 attacks, is totally unhinged. 4. To say that Trump's comments have no historical precedence is also false. Prior presidents such as FDR, Eisenhower, JFK, Nixon, Carter, etc., have at times made flattering and glowing comments about rival world leaders and tyrants in order to achieve strategic objectives. 5. It is true that U.S.-Russia relations have been strained, and we have nothing to gain from making a hostile enemy out of Russia. 6. I do not think it would have been prudent if Trump lashed out at Putin and went on a verbal tirade at a joint press conference with Putin standing right next to him. Do people not understand how diplomacy works? In public occasions such as joint press conferences, the leaders exchange flattery and make general comments while the hard work is done in private and behind the scenes. 7. It is highly likely that if Trump's comments were more aggressive, the media and the liberals would have attacked him for his reckless bellicosity. They also would have used the comments to pressure him to resign, arguing incorrectly that any interference by a foreign power is tantamount to illegitimacy of the election result. |
