ArchieLuxury was born on the 23rd of October in 1972. This was a great year as it was also the launch of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. Times were good, Nixon was in the White House and Gough Whitlam was just about to win a landslide election in Australia. 1972 was also the year the Mercedes Benz 350SL was available in showrooms across Australia, having been officially released in 1971.

Other significatnt cars available in 1972 include the BMW 2002tii, Mercedes Benz 300SEL 6.3, Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, Jaguar E Type Series III V12 and of course the Ferrari Dino 246GT and Daytona.

Archie’s father worked for a leading bank whilst studying economics at Queensland University. Archie had his first feel for luxury when he was in pre-school and was given cashew nuts instead of cheap peanuts by his mother in his lunch box. Archie’s family regularly enjoyed “the better” cuts of beef and Archie came accustomed to the better things in life.

Archie’s father obtained a job with Chase Manhattan bank in partnership with National Australia Bank when Paul Keating deregulated the dollar and the financial system. Archie’s father was a Merchant Banker with luxury car, corner office, expensive art work and busty secretary. Archie recalls the car as a Ford Fairmount Ghia (OZP-556) which cost $20,500 in 1983 (an average family car at the time cost about $10,000)

Archie is a huge fan of all obscene displays of wealth and is a firm believer in buying on the secondary market. Archie is presently married with 4 children (from marriages 1 and 3). Archie has reached a point where he is happy with his humble collections.

Breitling's have pretty gaudy and polarizing faces, with the exception of maybe the Super Ocean. Furthermore, Omegas almost all have full, in-house designed movements and some novel / useful innovation to them.

cr. Very busy faces full of useless words. They also helped lead the oversized watch fad. Pushing the standard from 40 to 44-46, which look ridiculous on almost anyone.

I'd definitely do a Super Ocean or Super Ocean 2-dial chrono, but those are the only two Breitlings I could personally see wearing.

My two watch rotation is a Hamilton 2-dial chrono w/ the H31 movement and Nomos Orion 38mm White w/ their Alpha movement; so I'm more down w/ clean faced and classic.

I did the pre-order for the smaller cased Ball Starlight, I'll see how I like it when it arrives. The pre-order price is so cheap I figure I can flip it if it turns out that it's not for me. Was also kind of cool that they let you custom pick the colors of the dial and lume and your serial # if available.

Nice. Cool on the preorder -- seems like a solid deal.

I have a Speedmaster moonwatch that was a graduation gift from my parents -- I'm thankful that I picked out something classic when I was 21 and not some giant Panerai that I wouldn't wear now. I always had it on the bracelet but recently bought some nato straps and a silicone strap and it's much more comfortable and I wear it more often.

I like the pilot watch look if I were going to get something else.

Moonwatch is great, the movement is from a Lemania (now Breguet).

I am on the fence about my next watch. Want to cop a Submariner or new GMT but Rolex has let the size/bling get to their watches, maybe will get a Tudor GMT for those SNOWFLAKE HANDS.

I really like the way the sub no date looks but the sub has no complication other than the date if you get that one. I would cop batman gmt.

Dealer mistakenly put Tudor GMT in 20% off case and honored the price, just copped the GMT for $2800 on leather.

Now I think I need to get the sub and then i'm done collecting watches.

Yeah, the Speedmaster w/ the manual wind movement is a "lifetime" watch worth keeping; it'll never come across as dated. I find trying out new straps keeps a watch fresh for me. Try a genuine horween leather strap, that leather has amazing feel.

Both lose half their value on the second hand market. Only Rolex and Patek hold their values. Cartier too but Cartier isnt high horology or Swiss.

Rolex has a fairly lock step process of raising the prices of new models, which props up the older models. Omega is starting to do this, look at the used prices for the new "Master" models, they're not dropping like bricks like the older seamasters.

That has more to do with millennials falling in love with mechanical watches. US sales are up like 40% across the industry this year. A few YouTube channels includuing Archy are why.

Also, I don't know if you regularly buy watches, but Rolex has in the past year drastically restricted supply of stainless sports watches (aka the most popular models), and prices in both the new/used market have shot up.

Yeah I don't really understand this. They're all luxury products and need to keep a name, but this seems to cheapen it, no? Are people really buying a $40-80k watch because they saw it advertised in Wine Spectator?

I think it's just to have its name out there and make sure the brand is in the head of the guy who will become rich one day. I have to say that PP seems like it's killing the marketing. It seems like they've associated the brand to ultra high end watches to the masses. Like rolls Royce or something.

It's not necessarily to get people to buy them, but rather to provide context for where the brand fits in consumers' minds. Note that the ads don't list prices and the Patek-purchased ones don't even list points of sales -- just a phone number and/or website. (A few of the retailer placed adds have a separate Wempe or Tourneau or whatever listing next to the ads, but they are very discreet and look like a different add kinda.) You seem MAF that the people in the adds are good looking and affluent as fuck!

They often times advertise in "luxury lifestyle" magazines, like cigar mags, etc. It's to anchor the brand with that level of indulgence.

I know you probably figure this ad isn't for you because you're not a railroad baron or a Rothschild, but ask yourself a question: have you seen this ad? Then it's for you. Time to learn why they know you better than you know yourself.

I.

The demo for this ad isn't the Rothschilds or the 1%: they don't buy based on ads. And they don't need to be told what constitutes quality or authenticity, they can tell, that's what boarding school was for. Everyone else is going to need to be hit over the head with the semiotics of quality-- The target demo is not the 1%; the target demo is the Aspirational 14%. They know they are supposed to like quality and goodness and etiquette and discretion, but no one ever taught them what those things look like, so when someone does point it out to them they will go all in. Hence: anything in Trading Up. And they don't care about the next generation. Not really. They don't want them to be eaten by zombies but anything past 2069 is of no consequence. What they do care about is how a product brands them, what it says about them now, now that time is running out. Can't afford to be subtle, which is the same thing as saying I'm willing to pay $10000 to get the message across. There's a difference between what the brand is and what the brand says about you. You'll pay 10x for the former and 100x for the latter.

Most products have quick, easy, memorable taglines, because most people are idiots. However, Patek Philippe's tag line is complicated and unmemorizable:

You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely take care of it for the next generation.

Which is the kind of tagline a person who wants to be a wealthy, complicated, precise man who doesn't fall for tag lines would fall for. The man in the photo is not a representation of the target demo; he is the impossible aspiration of the target demo. That explains how the kid can be in a sweater vest and not trying to murder his family.

I honestly only like one Patek -- their perpetual chrono in any variant. Their more basic watches are not appealing and I have no interest in a giant tourbillion even if I could afford one. Now Jaeger IMHO does not make a single ugly watch. I would buy one of each if I could. Whoever designs their shit is a genius.

It's not worth it. I've bought a couple rolexes in the last few years. Hit up the ktown authorized dealer. There's a shortage in SS sports models but that doesn't apply to you. These guys beat every dealer I've been to (BH, HI, OC) and barely above the grey market dealers in dtla (and those were used) and the guys on rolexforums. I checked a woman's model at the ktown AD vs jomashop and the ktown shop beat jomashop.

But did that dealer know you're a sophisticated buyer who has no problem buying gray (Jomas) or off the forums? Most ADs aren't going to default budge a lot of price to the typical walk-in customer.

There is still the CA sales tax aspect, that's another 10%. Not arguing there isn't good reason to buy from a local AD and getting a fair, but not rock bottom price, is still ok and worth it to some. I just see zero problem buying off of the forums.

Example, I'm picking up a 98% SMPc Ceramic w/ box and cards for $2050 from a local seller off the forums. It's $3095 @ Jomas; I'm fine saving $1,045 buying from someone who took the tags off, wore it lightly, then got bored. Completely certain I can wear this watch until it's due for service and sell it for no loss / slight gain.

It's easy. Andy speaks English. Just ask for discount. Then negotiate further. Very simple process. I've seen saint cross beat jomashop. Once it was like 200 bucks more (including sales tax). For me getting from AD is important. You have to go in person.

Name of dealer in ktown? My husband is also getting an omega seamaster so we are looking to buy a few things. I found a Persian dealer in Newport Beach with good prices better than jomashop and others large grey market dealers (without factoring sales tax), but would prefer somebody closer. I can get it shipped out of state to save on sales tax.

That's why there are choices. From a machining point of view, SMP and some PO's have more complex metalwork than a Sub (e.g. bezel bevel work). I'd also put the newer Omega movements > most Rolex movements; all the Master-series are anti-mag and the twin barrel design is material innovation for an in-house movement.

That said, I do like the Rolex movement inside the Tudors, the 70 hour reserve is a huge lift above a generic ETA caliber.

They're not for everyone. I can't get into Breitling and Panerai, just too overdone and garish for me.

I also view a watch as a signal of achievement. I find it silly when someone who isn't terribly successful financially has $1000's on their wrist. Exception to WIS-types who are just genuinely into the art of horology.

Btw, thoughts on the IWC Portofino?

What about the Rolex Oyster Perpetual? Overpriced?

IWC is a tricky one for me. A lot of their designs are pretty "me too" like their aviator and engineer. I do find the Aquatimer as an interesting take on a dive watch, though.

As for the Portofino, I do find that as a classy and sophisticated choice for a dress watch + they have a lot of interesting complications (hand wound, moon phases, chronos, etc).

The Rolex OP just never did it for me. You can buy them used for a fairly modest price, so it's one that if you like, I say give it a go and just flip it if you find it's not for you.

Thanks. The Portofino seems really nice to me for a quality dress watch.

I really like Lange & Söhne, but as good a year as I'm having, that's not happening any time soon.

I'm thinking about getting 2 new watches this year. Definitely the Oris Aquis and either a dress watch or a classy all purpose watch.

I'm a big fan of German brands, especially for simple/elegant dress watches. My wife and I have complimentary Nomos Orions. Mine is the all white version, hers is the classic two-tone with the blue'd hands that looks amazing. Their horween leather straps are 180^180.

See, that's an example of an IWC I dislike. You can get that aviator design from other brands + a lot more tech. I'd steer you towards Damasko for sure if you want that dial type, maybe Sinn, and certainly Stowa.

The Germans just do the aviator dial best, IMO.

Yeah, I like the Sinn/Stowa pilot's watches too. But I still really like the IWC. Haven't really looked at Damasko much.

You're fine buying off of there if the seller has been posting for a while and has done prior sales. You can also just use watchpatrol.net to search across all the forums.

I don't wear Rolex, but despite the fact that it's relatively mainstream versus more sophisticated "watch enthusiast" brands there is nothing wrong with wearing one. I know plenty of straight wealthy people who daily a Rolex.
