statheads are getting too excited about their make-believe problem sets / findings and extrapolating them into full-blown strategies that are really questionable. beauty of the emphasis on OBP was that it wasn't really just an "analytical result," it was a simple philosophy that made a lot of sense and that hand't really been thought of / put into practice much before. just don't get outs (i.e. get on base) and you're more likely to score runs. even bill james has criticized modern analytics over the focus on power. |

its too simplistic to credit just the nerds for the modern nba though. don nelson and mike d'antoni were pushing pace and shooting lots of threes years before anyone started talking about PER. and the nba (thankfully) helped bury the 75-70 final score rock fight era by allowing more zone defense, which forced more ball movement and three point shooting.
generally people that hate the modern nba are dumber (basketball) fans that don't actually consume the product and really just want to make themselves sound tough with their take on nba glory boys IMHO |
