Had a 180 walk around KL today, saw that hotel you mentioned in the PREFTIGE thread across from the old colonial train station. Much more to KL than I thought based on my last trip.

Sabah is way cooler than KL. Sounds like it will have to wait for next time. You still might want to go out to the Malaysian borer where all of the Bruneians go to drink. It’s the only nightlife you’ll find. Brunei is a lot cooler in concept than reality.

The Malaysian parts of Borneo are 180, KL is okay and Georgetown is genuinely cool. The resort towns are fine but you can find better versions of the same thing elsewhere inn SE Asia. I think bumming around Sabah and Sarawak would be awesome but would probably skip most of the peninsula tbh.

Yeah agree with you about Langkawi, no need to go there, but I really liked the Perhantians although that was a while ago, they’re a bit of a pain in the ass to get to so they’re (or were) a lot less busy and a lot more chilled out than say some of the Thai islands

it’s a small Malay village floating on a vast ocean of oil revenues

actually I remember thinking it doesn’t look like it’s floating on money, remember it being a little shabby for a petrostate apart from some enormous public/royal buildings — what’s it it look like now?

Overall, very boring place. Not much to see. Royal Regalia museum was OK, the two big mosques were big mosques. The Brunei Museum is now permanently closed, the Maritime Museum was closed. I went to a really pretty beach that was totally empty. Kampong Ayer was neat. If I went back, I would go into the jungle. The food was terrible, entire "city" is a ghost town after 6pm. Impossible to find taxis also. After going to the big mosque in Gadong, I had to walk across a highway to the night market (which was SPS), then ask a bunch of locals until I found a bus stop to take a bus back to BSB which was also LJL. I am heading out in a few but will post pictures soon. Also again...ambuyat is fucking gross.

So they poured tons of oil money into museums and then just let them rot? LJL. Not surprising.

Ambuyat is the national dish, google it. I'll post a picture later. It's gross. The Royal Regalia museum isn't rotting. It's basically just a museum filled with gifts people gave the sultan.
