it wasn't dangerous in the late 90's XO Rudy had already taken out the trash. Being a child downtown in the 80's was LJL compared to the Disney version of MFH we have today.

In my opinion, the atmosphere of 1980/90s NYC is captured most accurately in the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

It was much closer to current conditions than that of the 70s/80s

Still had more of the good qualities of the old era, though: lots of interesting stores, plenty of cheap restaurants and take-out options. Rent was expensive as fuck, but not as insanely out of control everywhere

"Williamsburg" and "Bushwick" did not exist in any sense of the way they do now.

Rough AF areas. Williamsburg was low income dangerous + Jews and Bushwick was Latin/shootings.

Many parts of Manhattan that are now extremely boughie (like west Chelsea by highline) were more industrial/derelict.

The city had experienced a vast resurgence but the wildfire of gentrification had only just begun.

It still had a luster of cool grittiness that I wish it still had, the last flames of which started to be stomped out during Bloomberg's first reign.

Oh and also, the twin towers. Growing up in NJ riding into the city and seeing them in the skyline you'd always be like "Wow, New York."

Trump was right when he said the towers should have been rebuilt exactly like they were.

Any well dressed job candidate could walk up and down wide avenues and encounter recruiters for the top firms standing outside the headquarters like carnival barkers, beckoning the best dressed into their offices for interviews and on the spot offers.

Girls were on average prettier, thinner, and less unpleasant. In late 90s, the prototype 20-somethings trying to make it in mfh were the girls on Friends. Now, the prototypes are the girls on Girls
