My parents have an attic full of old rat traps and mothballs. Once I found a basically petrified rat in one of the traps. All dried out and shit.

Mine is unfinished with two access points. Just random storage, Xmas decorations, spare luggage, leftover tiles from bathroom remodels, shit like that. We have an air handler up there for our second heat pump, that's gonna be a pain in the ass some day.

That system is old, could crap out any day. The small access point and small, irregularly sized nature of the space, plus the suffocating heat during warmer months, will make replacing it a bitch. I expect the HVAC guy will charge me extra.

Went through that exact process a couple years back. Surprisingly, no one charged extra for the attic, most likely because the employees who bid the jobs are not the installers.

When determining whether a particular unit will fit, make sure they are using the dimensions of the air handler with evaporator coil removed, which often adds an inch or two.

Get your own bid on widening the access point to the attic and repairing the ceilings after the fact. It will likely be much less than what the HVAC people quote and will be a better job.

Last, if you havr a space in your house where you can run a duct from your basement to your attic, you should look into going with a single, larger inverter compressor with zoning. When I looked into it, the Carrier Greenspeed was the best available option. I would consider this option only if you can find a contractoe with experience with that type of system.
