I suspect the primary goal of the operation, at least after the primaries, was to concoct the whole Russia story to use against Republicans after the election. It would have been a perfect play. Republicans (reluctantly) supported Trump. After Trump lost, no one would want to stand up for him, especially if it eisked being labeled a Russian sympathizer. As such, Republicans would have been forced to stand there and get beat up by the Dems and MSM for years over Russia.
The Republicans are incredibly lucky Trump won. If the election had went the other way, they would have been beyond fucked.
Just to be clear, the whole Russia-Trump thing was likely plotted out welll before the primaries, likely for that Republican donor. They had all the pieces in place and found a new buyer for their packaged Russia scandal in the Hillary campaign, which saw the potential synergies between the scandal and FISA warrants.
It's also possible that Fusion GPS was always working with the Hillary campaign on the Russia scandal, and they used the GOP donor as a Patsy. Even if no one thought Trump would win the GOP primary, it would still be useful to manufacture a basis to obtain FISA warrants for members of his campaign, given the likelihood that at least some members of his campaign staff would likely end up working for GOP's nominee and in light of FISA warrants authorizing collection of information 2 degrees of separation from the warrant's target. Many in the GOP would know exactly what happened, but there wouldn't be a damn thing they could do about it for fear of being labeled a Trump sympathizer after he lost. |
