There are a few posters who do and complain about in house being soul killing and not intellectually stimulating or whatever. As if checking commas or drafting 100 rogs is any better.

Most don’t regret it though.

I personally don’t give a shit about the work, but if you care, the work is going to be more “exciting” in a law firm.

I only care about the hours and no billing, nice people who aren’t demanding, and the job security of not being in an up and out situation. I would say comp too but frankly I was willing to take low-100s when I was looking so comp really wasn’t much of a factor at all for why I made the switch. If those are your reasons and you don’t care that much about the work, then you won’t regret it.

Lol at this. Ohhhhh, you get to draft a 10b-5 motion and email the client the draft and advice on “next steps.” So interesting! My first year, I was on a trial team in Delaware chancery and I was defending and taking depos as a 3rd year. It’s all shit, esp when you realize none of your so called “experience” is transferable and means anything to any other job outside biglaw lit.

Motion to dismiss a 10b-5 claim. I worked on a lot of “high profile” securities fraud and m&a cases esp after 08 financial crisis and discovery was always stayed pending the motion to dismiss so I didn’t have to do much nitty gritty discovery work as an associate. This was considered “sexy” biglaw work. It is neither intellectual nor interesting, no matter how you cut it. Biglaw is not where one goes to use ones’s brain, if that’s what you’re into.

My biglaw experience was decent compared to others, as I only billed 2150 my busiest year and I worked with mostly sane people. What laughable is that type of biglaw work, having been at a v10 and a v50 is anywhere what anybody would describe as being “intellectual,” unless you count somebody taking on a pro bono project or you’re an associate in some appellate practice in DC. And if you do find it interesting, there is something severely wrong with you.

I’m in a specilized litigstion group and I do find it legitimately interesting. There is zero BS work (almost no discovery, no motions to dismiss, etc.). It’s all pleadings on the merits, negotiations/settlements, deals, and giving advice to the clierts. Deal directly with clients, opposing counsel, and business folks on a daily basis.

Well glad you found your niche, but that doesn’t apply to your average biglaw lit associate.

And it’s kinda funny that you point out interaction with clients and business folks as “interesting” things when it’s uniformly better to be the client where you’re dealing with business folks constantly and farming out the legal work to biglaw so you don’t have to stay up late and deal with fire drills.

Going inhouse and having a shitty boss or shitty clients can be almost as bad as the median biglaw experience. It's not a guarantee of an upgrade day-to-day, but like a 90% chance of an upgrade and maybe a 20-30% chance of a huge upgrade if you actually like your boss, peers, clients and the overall business. It's a no brainer when you also factor in the relatively higher level of job security overall (though there are of course exceptions and specific types of downside to those exceptions).

I get people who stay in biglaw because they have a partner who protects them, trained/trains them, and they reasonably expect to make partner and have a future at the firm. But people who stay because they make ~30% more money before taxes depending on bonuses and because they believed all the Harrison Barnes stretch 4 inhouse flame are LJL idiots.

The best in-house is a base salary ~60 percent of biglaw and a bonus/deferred comp portion that is close to Biglaw base & bonus. After three or four years, depending on vest schedule, you will make senior associate money for the rest of your career, but you’ll be used to living on 60 percent of that.

And if you’re actually good enough to become GC you’ll make seven figures.

The pay is more like $450,000 for a senior associate versus $210,000 for in house. So more like 100% more before taxes.

I have panic attacks thinking about going back.

I will likely never make seven figures, inflation adjusted, but you still make very good money for dat upper middle class. And when a third of your pay is deferred comp you don’t get lifestyle creep and can retire at 55. I can’t even understand all the 60-year-old partners who are practically paycheck to paycheck. If you’re disciplined you can retire from Biglaw at 45, but literally no one does.

Yea. Rejected it because it put our family in a worst off position, but they needed help so they arranged a short term assignment. They're paying the apartment, multiple return flights to the US in business class, CoL increase, and a per diem of about $50 a day.

I don't get their reasoning. Me being here will probably come out to like $60-70k at least for a 4 month stint. The flight to my destination alone was like $3k. They want to extend it, but wife is pregnant and she doesn't want to have the kid here.

Plus, office is full of like nubile 20 year olds in slutty makeup. So marriage may not last if I stay. JFC. Euro chicks are another level.

Your mileage may vary. Really depends on how bad biglaw was for you and what your practice group was. Upside of inhouse is clearly the hours, and time is something you never get back. No one's biglaw existence is meaningful. nor is anyone's inhouse job. You're truly delusional if you think otherwise. So in a lot of ways, lower hours wins, as you have more time to devote to outside pursuits or just enjoying life.

Downside of inhouse IMO is you're sheltered from a lot of BS corporate stuff when you're at a firm. Sure, you know of it but it's not an everyday thing. Inhouse, you often have to "build relationships" and hang out with people who make the dummies at most biglaw firms look like rocket scientists (e.g., HR people, people doing literally nothing for $120K, etc.). You're also constantly bothered by pointless meetings and work on boards and committees, which is unpleasant if you're introverted. if you can make it to the SVP/MD level or equivalent, you're getting biglaw $$ (prob high six figs to $1M at a lot of banks), and that beats the fuck out of biglaw given that it's less work.

This, basically. There are shitty things about both, but if you have social skills, in-house shit is easier to swallow. More work on teams, less time as idiot savant working alone.

I love in-house. Comp hit is real, but declining marginal utility of each extra dollar is far outweighed by marginal gain for each hour of free time. You can have a great, chill life with hobbies and such.

Timely. Thinking about the same thing. Actually really like 60% of biglaw experience, but other 40% is fucking horrible (e.g., entering time at 11 pm after working 14 hrs). Been told partnership is real possibility, but all partners have been divorced multiple times and look like they are getting ready to keel over from work.

from a financial independence/leaving-the-law standpoint, there is no biglaw vs. inhouse debate. inhouse is just a necessary step toward ur end goal of not dealing with legal bullshit for the rest of ur life

imagine that financial freedom is like trying to land on the moon

biglaw represents those huge boosters that u need to escape earth's gravity. good income but those boosters burn out far before u get to the moon.

inhouse is like the shitty, slow, engine that finishes ur journey to the moon so u can finally finish ur legal "career." it's slow as fuck bc u earn less than biglaw but that's okay bc (1) u're almost done saving and (2) if u aren't finished saving $$$, u can generally hang around inhouse for a while without getting the boot

"boosters burn out" = assuming no breakfast?

if u're able to get breakfast, that's like getting an extra booster stage -- but then again, if u're up for breakfast, u also might not be the type of person who wants to land on the moon and reach the promised land of financial freedom in the first place
