Mine is divided into:

Fiction (too many, so my favorites go on the primary shelf with the above, and the rest are in random order on a separate shelf)
edit: also I have some "show" books like my Oxford complete works of Shakespeare, an illustrated edition of The Hobbit, and The Book of Kells that are on top of the bookcase

Separate areas for green and red hornbooks and anything else that's a large number of visually identical books.
