I grew up in the midwest and was shocked when one of my jew friends, who loved to joke about bombing Iran, said he was a jew atheist. That may make perfect sense to a New Yorker, but my brain nearly melted down when he said that.

I also remember listening to Howard Stern who had Debbie Gibson on. Her jewish ex-boyfriend was some semi-star who Howard brought on during the interview. That isn't what Christianity actually believes though. What I wrote is actually core belief for Judaism. A more similar statement would be believing that Jesus died for your sins and that belief in Christ is essential to one's salvation.
