that said they will push him, here is their calculus:
1) push him through, get a backlash among women voters in midterms, lose more house seats than expected, possibly an extra senate seat or two
2) don't push him through, no impact on midterms, but now they don't get the SC nom they want.
they will choose 1 because they are already going to lose the house so their long term calculus is to do everything to preserve the conservative majority on the court while they become the minority party in congress for probably quite some time as millennials overtake boomers in the voting pool. |

The theory was that Kavanaugh is pro-executive power which is beneficial to Trump whereas a generic conservative Justice might not be.
But that doesn't make any sense at all, because it assumes that the 4 other conservative justices are pro-executive power as well (to the same degree at least).
But it seems like Justice Roberts would already be to the left of anyone Trump nominates anyways. |
