I like making high protein baked stuffed peppers on sundays every month or so - they're super re-heatable, can last a whole week, and you can do so many ethnic variations -- I love mexican but also do vegetarian indian version with chickpeas and of course my fave is traditional italian style

I never had a recipe bc my mom makes them too but this one below best mimics my method ... I substitute half of the real rice for cauliflower rice sometimes to reduce carbs since you can just get pre-riced cauliflower all over now -- also, despite the advantages of leaner meats, I stick to ground beef or ground sausage because it really just adds so much more flavor

https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2014/08/cheesy-stuffed-mexican-peppers-red-chili-recipe.html

there are many more - this is one that I never get sick of, though

Interesting.

I can't put a name to a lot of scents but some things instantly trigger a certain time or place.

One of those is rain on asphalt b/c that's what my school had as blacktop and that smell just reminds me of elementary-middle school.

Another I guess is grass, again b/c of all the times we played baseball/soccer/flag football in elementary/middle school at lunch

IRL though I'd say there are a couple of areas I could return more on - it'd be impossible to imagine as a lesser-earner (although devoted primary caregiver of a 181^181 babbydood) I could really ever feel comfortable with my level of return

My 3yo daughter has become obsessed with explaining to wife and me that women with short hair are still ladies even though they look like men. I do my best not to smile.

lol short hair shade

little kids are such a joy - I love how savage and gentle they can be within a single moment

my babby is really repeating so much of what we say at this point so it's hard to choose the cutest thing said -- I made his favorite toy, a wooden penguin, a bed (we mimic goodnight routine with penguin) and he gives penguin a kiss and hums our goodnight song to him and calls him his "pinwin"

he also hugs all the other kids at the playground

I could go on and on he's amazing

I can't imagine what he'll be like at 3 - your kid sounds super verbal and observant

Awesome. Sounds adorable. Take pics and videos because (as you know) he'll drop that stuff as quickly as he began it, but then he'll start doing something else cute.

Mine has been super focused on Halloween this year. The innocence is awesome to see -- literally nothing in the world is getting more of her attention lately than trying to work out what's the best Halloween costume. Currently pirate is in the lead.

Will take a Q if you're up for it.

ty. Screen time:

Now: It really, really bugs me to see kids sitting at a table at a restaurant or out on a family day glued to a screen. They're not engaged with their surroundings or their family; they're playing some mindless tap-tap-tap game or watching a show. This is nearly always lazy parenting. I "get it" because it's easy and it shuts the kid up, but come on: Spend time with the kid for the few opportunities that a career person gets to do so - be engaged, talk to him/her, teach zher how to enjoy things other than passively watch videos and ads, etc.

I think ~60 mins/day is fine, and ideally it's something sort of educational (and a lot of kids' shows seem to be). I like family movie nights, too, and my daughter loves it and gets so excited.

Before: I probably would have taken the xo virgin approach that it's bad and to put it off as long as possible, but now I understand that sometimes you need to put on Sesame Street for 30 mins to get an email out, take a shower, make a phone call, get dinner together, etc.

60 mins a day, huh? hmm.

do you and your wife agree on screen time?

now that my son is more mobile I feel tempted to use TV for 30 or so minutes -- we have been watching parts of Moana (I fast-forward the scarier stuff) over the past several months so I can cut his nails (he is really resistant to this grooming routine), and much to my surprise, at the end there's this green island goddess thing that emerges (very non-violent moment in the movie - happy happy times and songs) but he started crying so now I am afraid to show him TV again

needless to say a giant green thing with eyes on a beautiful smart TV screen seems scary for sure, but it turned me off a bit

I loved watching movies and snuggling on the couch with my parents when I was a kid

Wife is 98% caregiver during the week and it's probably 50/50 on the weekends. She makes decisions although I imagine that I'd have a veto if I really objected to something. We're both fine with the 60 min average (it's more like 1 show / 30 mins on weekdays, with some extra or a movie on the weekends, so probably 60 average).

Moana is currently a house favorite here. Coco was interesting -- I didn't really know what it was about but she talked about death for 2 weeks after ("when do we die?" "will you and mama die before I die?" "I think we'll die soon" -- I was glad when those thoughts had passed!).

Coco must be visual crack for a kid

a friend of mine went to a presentation at UW-Madison about screen time and a study that was done indicated that screen time has positive influence if what's on screen is contextualized and there is active discussion during

his kid watches Daniel the Tiger, which contextualizes itself because it seems primarily educational -- the kid sings every song and actually learned how to share from the show

I can't imagine it being something any girl would be excited about unless her brain was wired for risk and danger seeking and she found possibly being caught having sex by her parents erotic

Anyway to reinvent yourself or should you focus on a new hobby like cooking?

To appease her, I read some book about the drama of a gifted child and some eckhart tolle. I retained none of it, but apparently she thinks this is a sign of progress.

what did you think of the drama of the gifted child? did it feel applicable to you? any major takeaways?

having three kids is a major bummer when it comes to thinking flexibly and creatively about your individual wishes, wants -- it is sort of the token "dangerous to dream" scenario

it's great your wife supports you being happier away from a toxic job

how much wiggle room do you have before you have to start a new gig in a full-time-ish capacity?

Drama of the Gifted Child was extremely triggering for me - I think I saw a part of myself in every single anecdote presented. Honestly, it makes me never want to work in law ever again, because I think I wound up in law because I am flawed and was fucked up all through school and I hate it and it is the furthest thing from my true self that could possibly exist.

The kids are great. They are raucous and annoying and ALWAYS needy as fuck, but they are cool to have around. It's like the home is this important center for them, which is cool, because without the kids, it'd be a bombed out shell of a dwelling where dreams go to die.

She is a better person than me.

I don't know exactly, my wife obviously works, I am currently on severance and then will go on unemployment. And we have savings. I guess I could go, at the upper range, maybe 10-12 years without working.

very cool that your kids get to have extra time with you (assuming at least one or two of them aren't in school yet?)

rare kids get that with dads

maybe enjoy more time with them and use some of that old work energy and apply it to cool memory-making kid activities

would you ever go back to school?

w/r/t back to school

Maybe, but unlikely. At this point in my life, I feel like school isn't the place for me. Obviously, I can still learn things new, but. . . I just don't know. Running off to HBS doesn't seem that practical.

there's a secret life hack in here somewhere

of course you're stuck and disillusioned - you went from being on the hamster wheel (for presumably most of your life) and now you're off

it's a really cool gift to have another era of your life to anticipate and create and possibly excel in

but a huge burden, especially factoring in kids and that word "practical" comes up

sounds like you've supported your family quite a lot - maybe they could handle a few years of supporting you if you find something that feels like a good fit and that could make you happier than you were or than you are

kids are resilient, your relationship sounds pretty resilient (if you're sharing books from the psychology section of the book store)

use those resources as strengths
