WASHINGTON — Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s release of DNA records that she says proves her Native American ancestry — and her demand that President Trump pony up $1 million for charity as he promised — served as the unofficial launch of the Bay State lawmaker’s 2020 presidential bid.

But it also left some Democrats grumbling about the timing, just three weeks before what they call “must-win” midterm elections as some polls show the once potentially powerful blue wave losing strength.

As one Democratic strategist said: “If you want to talk about health care, or children being ripped from their parents and put in cages, great. But I have no interest whatever in shaking Sen. Warren’s family tree before Nov. 7.”

Jim Messina, President Obama’s 2012 campaign manager, said he understood that Warren had to eventually counter Trump’s repeated use of the slur “Pocahontas” to refer to her claim of Native American heritage.

But, he said, referring to the slickly produced video that Warren released yesterday morning featuring a genealogist identifying a 6th- to 10th-generation Native American ancestor, “I would have done it 22 days from now.”

Later on Twitter, Messina lamented: “Why can’t Dems ever stay focused???”

Others called Warren’s announcement a politically savvy move, setting her apart from a massive field of potential Democratic presidential candidates.

“She has already separated herself as the chief protagonist against Donald Trump,” Democratic strategist Mary Anne Marsh said. “She’s already the front-runner, because she’s done more preparation than anybody else”

At a July campaign rally in Montana, Trump said of Warren: “I will give you a million dollars to your favorite charity, paid for by Trump, if you take the test and it shows you're an Indian."

But yesterday he denied it.

“I didn’t say that,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “You better read it again.”

Ask yourself this: if the sun rose in the west, do you think Trump would have simply conceded the point and moved on? Of course not! He would have almost certainly sent a similar tweet to the one Tuesday in which he alleged -- with no evidence -- the sun rises in the east.
