The first one made >$1B inflation adjusted and made the books much more popular. It was a huge phenomenon for years and is nostalgic for a lot of 18-35 year olds.

the books are 180 as fuck and i say that as a grown man that didn't pick one up until my 30s. download the jim dale audiobooks and listen to them on the way to work. it will take months but they're unbelievably entertaining.

the films are fun, but nothing particularly special in comparison.

Now imagine you're me, a younger millennial who was ~11 when the first book came out, just like Harry. For the 4th-7th ones (I believe), I went to the midnight drops at Barnes and Noble and stayed up all night and the next day until I finished them, putting them down only to go to the bathroom and eat

So 180

yeah there were some kooky overlap coincidences, like I remember I read the part about Harry making out with Cho only a couple weeks after I had french kissed a girl for the first time at camp

edit: also guess I was wrong about the initial age. I was 11 when I read Sorcerer's Stone for the first time, but it was a couple years after it was released, wasn't waiting on the release dates until the 4th one

Zero frame of reference? I'm inundated 24/7 with harry potter bullshit because every single other faggot millennial read the books and won't shut the fuck up about harry potter and gay dumbledores and alan rickman's worst roles and levardium faggotrosa and every other goddamn aspect of a fucking subpar children's book. That's like saying I'd have a very different opinion of 50 shades of grey if I'd read it when I was 11, completely fucking irrelevant.

They were absolute page turners but had ~zero lasting impact after I closed them. Truly good books stay with you.

i think it might actually be jurassic park. along with T2 a couple years earlier, it was the film that led to the dominance of "CGI" in big-budget films, as well as entrenching the "summer tentpole" business model of megapictures instead of a wider range of "smaller" films. it was also established with the intent of launching future installments by developing the story's "universe." which it did.

Most of you guys are just listing a bunch of good or famous movies. Very few of them did jack shit individually in terms of causing real world cultural change. There’s been some coherent arguments made so far for the matrix and broke back, and even those are weak. Plenty of AI movies preceded the matrix, or covered it’s other themes. And broke back was barely even seen by anyone who didn’t already support what was already an increasingly popular position.

You need to work backwards. The major cultural themes of today are identity politics, social media and internet connectivity and an increasing drive towards rootless job mobility coupled with a decrease in living near ones family. I don’t think ANY film can individually get close to being a major contributor. TV (friends, the kardashians, SATC, the daily show, etc) has much more power in driving and normalizing these trends over time due to repetition, reach and consistency.

That said, if forced to pick a movie, i agree with the guy who said Harry Potter. Thie closest we’re going to get in terms of films is probably going to a series for the reasons mentioned above. And these films have huge global reach, went on for a decade, and were widely viewed (and rewatched repetitively) by millennials driving today’s social trends, most importantly during their formative preteen and teenage years. A lot of the themes set up by the movies are echoed today... racism/classism/sexism and the abuse of power is the defining characteristic (mudblood/pureblood/houseelves/wizard nazis/etc)... less reliance on family and more on friends/schools/yourself (Harry’s an orphan... hermione basically ignores her family and human life for the majority of the series and even abandons them at the end to accomplish some greater cause... boarding school and spending 90% of your time away from your family is normalized, etc.)... obviously this doesn’t cover the Instagram age, but the films have obviously left their mark already and will probably do so for years to come given that they drove the moral development of an entire generation of kids.

Brokeback had more impact than you're noting, not because it was popular but because it marked the point where entertainment and media really started to push the "Love is Love" message and really attempt to influence opinions.

Gay marriage was still opposed by a majority and sodomy had only been outlawed nationwide 2 years before lol.

I think you’re conflating acceptance of gay marriage and acceptance of homosexuality. Lots of people are totally supportive of gay couples but don’t support gay marriage. This was a particularly popular position around 2007 and is still prevelant today. So I don’t buy your premise. In any case, this movie did jack shit to normalize gay marriage or shift trends on that subject. Gay marriage wasn’t even a prevailing theme of the movie.

At best the film further normalized and validated homosexuality generally... but I don’t think this was the case. Nobody who didn’t already accept that two guys could legit love each other watched this movie all the way through. Literally nobody. And there were already plenty of (more popular and enjoyable) movies featuring homosexuality that had done way more to normalize and humanize gay guys. Broke back was just a good drama that happened to feature serious themes on homosexuality. But that doesn’t mean it was culturally influential despite the fact society is a lot more accepting of homosexuality and gay marriage today.

This is a sort of an autistic argument. Gay marriage was just an example of where society was at during that time compare to the lib minefield we're in today. You're solely focusing on who watched the movie and not on what a cultural shifts really entail. It's not solely limited to watching the movie. If a movie has a real culture impact, it comes from the ripples it makes in society that affect people who don't even watch it. And that was the point I was making about change in media attitudes from tolerance to pushing acceptance after the film was successful, whether justified or not.

I'm not saying the film had a huge impact, but you said it had none at all, and that's not really the case.
