If so, general thoughts/experience? Is the claim by Susman/BSF that they offer more interesting work early on flame? Are they sweatshops? Different culture than regular biglaw?

What exactly is a "boutique"? Just a firm that only handles a select type of litigation?

Typically refers to litigation only firms, particularly trial specialization firms. Susman Godfrey/Boies Schiller/Bartlitt Beck/Kellogg Hansen/Kobre & Kim/Keker & Van Nest are all prime examples, and Susman, Boies, and Bartlitt all claim to give associates a ton of early responsibility and fast track them to partner with a real up or out model.

All of the above will handle pretty much any type of litigation, and some of them (particularly Susman) do a lot of all-or-nothing contingency work.

I've litigated against some of the firms mentioned in this thread. A few observations: Juniors get substantive work (depos/hearings/putting on a witness at trial) earlier than biglaw. They bill a shit ton of hours and a lot of them burn out fairly quickly, but then land on their feet somewhere else, or break off with colleagues to form a smaller boutique. Bonuses can be significantly higher than biglaw, especially when a couple big contingency matters come in.

TY for response!

Would you say it's a good fit for someone who actually enjoys litigation?

definitely, compared to biglaw...you have more trials in general, and juniors get more of the attendant “on your feet”stuff that goes to senior associates / junior partners in biglaw

I worked for a shitlaw firm, John Doe and Associates, where it was me, two other recent grads and John Doe. Doe would call it a litigation boutique. He also reffer to himself as the "senior partner."
