Serial Podcast Season 3 is really good - shows what scumbag prosecutors are

First episode deals with a 19 year old chick who was at a bar, had her ass slapped by some rednecks, she told them to stop, then some white trash chicks punched her. Some cops came by to break it up, and as she was flailing around she hit the cop.
Prosecutors charge her with felony assault on a police officer.
The whole thing just shows what a sham the system is. No one else is charged with a crime. The cop is on video saying he won't press charges. The shrew prosecutor won't drop charges because "even though the girl was being kicked on the ground, she still hit a cop and that's a felony."
On the eve of trial they plea it out and she gets disorderly conduct and a $200 fine and the prosecutors are like "that's fair!" - and the vocal fry host points out that it wasn't a $200 fine because the 19 year old girl spent 4 days in jail, had to pay a bondsman $500 for her 5k bond, pay $800 in court costs, drive to the court house 20+ times for urine testing, etc - and oh yeah, they tried to charge her with a felony they knew was complete bullshit.

You're right that most people probably committed some crime. But the show is right that even if you are innocent, you have no choice but to plea out because you can't risk doing the time for the bullshit prosecutors are charging you. |

The other patrons in the bar lied about what happened to start the fight, which the cop didn't see, which is why nobody else was arrested.
And some idiot lib woman prosecutor wanted to throw the book at this girl because she's more attractive and the prosecutor feels like she needs to throw her weight around as an OMG YOUNG WOMAN in the prosecutor's office.
As soon as a man took over the file he was like "what the fuck is this" and got the case disposed of. Obviously he isn't going to just drop the charges on the morning of trial after the defense has already made a suggestion of misdemeanor
The whole episode didn't reflect poorly on the general county prosecutor's office at all, just some braindead affirmative action female hire

A 16 year old kid commits 3 robberies in 1 day at gun point, pointing a gun at the clerks faces, telling people to get on the ground, etc. The host then asks why the cops didn't call his parents as he confessed and says "my kids can't even go on a field trip without parent permission."

She seems to think it is somehow unfair that he is getting punished for throwing piss and video games at guards and getting involved in 10+ assaults because "other people did it to him first."
Also goes the entire season and finds not one instance of black and white people being treated differently, but closes with a 5 minute monologue about how the system is racist. |
