Star Wars and Harry Potter (and , Middle Earth, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, etc) all have exemplary world building, which means that when someone revisits them, you can get lost in diegesis at the expense of exegesis.

Even the febrile attempt at critical analysis of this stuff is just an exercise in that—you take some tepid potted analytic lens (feminism! Christ allegory! Plato’s Cave!) and play a matching game with diegetic details to a pre formed “critical” mold. The various “X and Philosophy” books (Simpsons and Philosophy, Buffy and Philosophy, etc) exemplify this.

So the more you get immersed in the details and in the “canonical” reality (so, the shared truth of the shared universe), you get stuck there.

In one of my favorite movies, In the Mouth of Madness, a phenomenally popular horror novelist brings about the apocalypse because the collective imagination is fixated on the reality of his books.

Harry Potter stuff is like that, except instead of creating a fantastic reality in the flesh, it creates infantile echo chambers.

Some of the best parts of GoT you can sort of avoid it, although the TV shows do not help. There are some parallels to real world history there, & GRRM did a fairly ok job of at least grounding some of the politics in reality but in the end you can't escape getting lost in the "world-building" if you're too into it.

But world building should only inform the core storyline and is best when in the background (Verhoeven’s science fiction movies are good at this); there are literal books just about the spaceships and the weapons and equipment in the Star Wars EU.
