Quit drinking a little over a month ago after a bad case of acute pancreatitis (my 3rd episode). The last one was severe and my Lipase (pancreas enzyme) level did not go down right away so I had to be in the hospital for a few days.

Finally that was a wake up call. Everything has been good since then until yesterday when my stomach started hurting and diarrhea started up. Went to the doc, he tested, and my Lipase level is high again (310). He thinks it's the early stage of chronic pancreatitis, which is irreversible and progressive.

I'm such a degenerate piece of shit.

college, law school, and the few years after that was mostly just binge drinking one night a week (10-15 drinks maybe?). Past 5 years that slowly turned into 2 days a week, then 3, and then 4. Last 6 months was especially bad where I was drinking almost every night.

if you're not having a really bad stomach pain and/or lots of nausea it's not an acute pancreatitis attack so your Lipase level and Amylase will likely be fine. If you have a lot of stomach pain one day and you've been drinking a lot go in and have your Lipase checked. Simple blood test with quick results.

They could do a stool sample to check how well your pancreas is functioning. That's a decent indicator of chronic pancreatitis.

Things like MRIs and CT scans are shitty at detecting chronic pancreatitis in its early stages because the pancreas still looks normal at that point (even though it's on an irreversible and progressive course). My CT scan shows a 100% normal pancreas.

first, sorry you have to deal with this. that said, I do appreciate sharing this here. its a good service for other bros.

I do not have any physical impacts other than hang overs but I drink a shit ton and I know this will catch up to me. Actually, I have felt a pain on towards on my side towards back along waistline. that was a while back. blood tests for this or what?

I'm honest with my dr. and he obviously says don't drinks as much or at all but hes like you don't seem like you want to quite so not sure where this is going.

Yeah, it's the worst, most boring chronic disease you can imagine. Just pain until your pancreas is dead. You burp and fart a lot and it doesn't even kill you that fast. It's like 10 years off your life expectancy unless you get pancreatic cancer, which is about 50/50 and has one of the highest fatality rates.

And you can't even drink anymore just so you can hopefully stay alive a few more years. BTW, you can't get life insurance anymore, so your family is fucked too.

I just keep drinking and hopefully I'll die sooner and glad I locked in the life insurance.

You should go balls to the wall and track it competitively. Better to die in a fiery explosion at Laguna Seca than in a hospital from pancreatitis. Put it in full XO livery.

Yeah, always felt like I did pretty well in the genetic lottery until this shit happened. It's fine. Even though I was a functioning alcoholic I knew I was drinking too much and I did very little about it. So I deserved this.

Sounds like you caught it early, at least. From what I’ve read you can keep it mostly at bay if you catch it in the early stages, control your diet, & take enzymes when you eat.

It might be true drunks lie about how much they drink but I'm on an anonymous message board. WTF do I care?

If anything, I overstated how much I drank because I'm being hard on myself for being a piece of shit.

That’s what I expected. Seems like liquormos are more prone to pancreatic problems than beermos.

also 80% of the time i would drink on an empty stomach

definitely seems to happen more often to liquor-drinkers but my GI doc said that he has a patient that literally only drank miller light (5-6 a day for about 15 years) and he got it.

I think I have chronic hepatitis from 11 years of heavy drinking and some Rx meds. They triggered it (now a self perpetuating autoimmune process I think. ) I’m going to give fasting a try to see if that fixes it.

Sorry about your problem. I considered the possibility that mine was chronic pancreatitis and researched it a lot. Sucky prognosis

further confirmed with a stool elastase test. pancreas showing no duct blockage or other abnormalities on the CT scan, but looks like my pancreas is slowly dying.

they want to repeat the stool test in a couple months to see if the pancreas continues to head down hill.

in the meantime, my stomach hurts roughly 50% of the time, especially if I eat anything that has fat in it.

I stopped drinking as much. My stomach still hurts from time to time but when that happens I get my lipase (pancreas enzyme) checked and it's been normal.

My pancreas probably is messed up to some extent but overall it's okay.

I still need to stop binging on the nights I do drink but in general I've cut back a lot. FWIW, the year after I got acute pancreatitis I quit altogether
