Chick-fil-A along with In-and-Out have the best experience of all the fast food restaurants, with good food at a low cost and good service while treating their employees well. GC wringing out "inefficiencies" at the expense of humans is disgusting. Just est your chicken fries and Philly Cheese King at your local soulless, empty Burger King and leave CFA alone.

1) The Cathy family isn't dumb. even if they were dumb, they'd hire sophisticated bankers if they were going to sell or go public. The changes you outline would be priced into the sale, and the returns would decrease accordingly. This highly successful national chain isnt suffering because of management incompetency.

2) You are assuming profit maximization is always a good idea or "smart." Instead of maximizing profits Chick-fil-a is spreading value to consumers with low prices, employees by hiring and paying enough, and probably some personal value by being closed on sundays. Their utility from these things is > more profit. I doubt their quality of life would change substantially with more money.

2. I agree that if they're smart about exiting the business, they'll capture *some* (but not all) of future cost savings that a better operator would extract. But what about the profits they're missing out on right now because their costs are inflated, they're closed on Sundays and they don't have enough stores (lol at someone pointing to their high per store sales like its necessarily a good thing)

3. Neither of us can say whether the Cathy family is running their business in a way that maximizes social utility. Personally I think lots of people would love faster service, a more responsive menu, a bigger national footprint and service on Sundays. My only point is that theres likely a massive delta between Chick fil a's current and maximum profit. I'll leave the pointless ruminations about whether profit is a legitimate end for businesses to someone else.
