This did not include preventative visits (eg. annual checkups). However, in something like 80% of those cases doctors still treat the problem even though the treatment is known to be ineffective or unnecessary. In other words, most of the stuff people go to doctors for, doctors can't treat, but that does not stop the doctors from treating the problem anyway.
Textbook example is someone going to a doctor with a bad cold, flu or viral throat infection. This is a huge percentage of doctor's visits and doctors will proscribe antibiotics even when they know there's a 90% chance that it's a viral infection and that if it did en up being a bacterial infection it would clear up in a few days on its own.

Medical Ethicisists generally agree that antibiotics should only be given in life-threatening or other very serious cases. Doctors themselves just do what's easy in the short term. |
