especially ER doctors. When I went to the ER with my torn pectoral, the doctor gave me an xray, said it was negative, told me that she cannot diagnose a soft tissue tear without an MRI, and to see an ortho in 2 weeks if it didnt get better.

I saw an ortho 5 days later and he yelled at me for waiting so long to get surgery.

ERs will never do musculoskeletal MRIs outside of looking for spinal epidural abscess, cord compression, etc. a shoulder MRI would take a full day or two to schedule, perform, and be read by a MSK radiologist

...people showing up to the EMERGENCY room and expecting immediate care for their non-urgent issues is a reason why we pay so much. that MRI machine relies on a ton of staff to operate and is being used by people with strokes, spinal tumors, major trauma, and kids/pregnant women with life threatening abdominal infections. they should drop everything they're doing when EARL shows up so he can regain 5% more function in 12 weeks less time? i'm sure his azn bball league would be very grateful

Because some people actually need emergency MRIs. When I shattered my kneecap and dislocated my knee, I was one of those people. I had to wait 12 hours for an MRI and I was in surgery within 24.

I would have at least hoped for the doctor to look at the giant hole where my pec had been and say, this is probably torn, you need an mri, get one ASAP. Versus, make an appointment with an ortho in 2weeks if it doesn’t improve.

Last two times I went to er doctor:

Muscle cramp in my neck I could not move at all - they gave me advil.

Swelling - they eliminated a bunch of possible causes, told me they found nothing and to take a bath with Epsom salt until it goes away.

So yeah.

What the fuck do you think an ER doctor does? The only thing they are there for is to give people quick fixes and then point them to specialists. They get penalised if a patient is in there longer than 4 hours.

to what extent do cancer surgeries just end up spreading cancer cells around? like trying to scoop out a bunch of lymph nodes or other such procedures?

Commonly especially if its in the bone or liver.

Probably the only need for surgery is breast cancer because there's nothing you can really miss in there but basically everything else will just be treated with radiotherapy in a decade.

I read medical journal article once that estimated that something like 80% of doctor's visits for non-traumatic health issues lead to no effective treatments. This did not include preventative visits (eg. annual checkups). However, in something like 80% of those cases doctors still treat the problem even though the treatment is known to be ineffective or unnecessary. In other words, most of the stuff people go to doctors for, doctors can't treat, but that does not stop the doctors from treating the problem anyway.

Textbook example is someone going to a doctor with a bad cold, flu or viral throat infection. This is a huge percentage of doctor's visits and doctors will proscribe antibiotics even when they know there's a 90% chance that it's a viral infection and that if it did en up being a bacterial infection it would clear up in a few days on its own.

Both.

Human overuse is more of a problem for human health since it leads to the evolution of the specific bacteria that actually cause illness already (eg. AB-resistant Gonorrhea)

Medical Ethicisists generally agree that antibiotics should only be given in life-threatening or other very serious cases. Doctors themselves just do what's easy in the short term.

It's a peak experience

I had horrendous acne in high school that was 100% cured in a few months thanks to Accutane. Literally changed my life.

I had dry, red eyes that were completely healed thanks to restasis

And finally, I had bad allergies that completely go away when I take flonase. This is the only one where I actually need to still take something.

Not sure if this counts but I also had bad teeth that were completely fixed via orthodontics.

It's based on manipulating the nervous system. It's scientific.

edit: You mention upthread going for Adderall. Have you considered getting adjusted? If there is a better flow of nervous system impulses through your spine you might have better work endurance and need little or no harsh stimulants. (I still love coffee though, heh)

I've never once considered getting "adjusted." There's no way in hell I'm letting someone forcibly 'adjust' my neck or whatever they do. I'd have far less work endurance if I were paralyzed from the neck down.

My dog gets better healthcare than me. Can go see the vet any time on zero notice. When he had bad a skin allergy problem, vet gave him a new, highly effective medicine that is available for dogs but not humans tanks to the lengthy FDA approval process (apoquel). The dog can also get vaccinated against Lyme disease (the human vaccine was pulled off the market due to lawsuits by hypochondriacs). He even has health insurance which costs $25 a month.
