the Jews don't *actually believe* in God or any of the religious meaning behind their customs, etc, yet they keep them alive, because they recognize their essential utility. you can't improve on tradition as a mechanism for social cohesion and functionality. they don't pretentiously abandon their traditions, like xtians do, and become tatted-up godless hedonists. they are atheists, but also traditionalists, w/ the proper sense of irony. |
