My personal opinion is I love it and I get it, but I don't feel I could live there. It's like even the cities are suburb-y like, it's weird. And it doesn't have the tension I need. But it's probably one of the most beautiful places in the world and I've been around the world. I like it & love to visit.

Probably the most telling thing is the tendency of schoolkids (who feel the anti-northerner animus more acutely than anyone) to lump people from Wisconsin and Illinois in with people from the northeast, because both are "the north". (Even though, obviously, midwestern culture is much closer in many superficial ways to southern culture, and is more agreeable to virtually all southerners.)

I don't agree that they perceive northerners as "jewy"; most southerners weirdly love (the idea of) jews, even if they don't know any -- a jew at my middle school would've have kids fighting to bring him to the Wednesday-night party/revival/sermon at the local Southern Baptist mega-church (12,000 weekly attendance), so that he could "ask jesus into his heart" and thus be "saved". They could watch a fucking woody allen movie and not understand that it had any connection to jewish stereotypes; it's just not something they have experience with.

Northerners are *definitely* thought of as effete little faggots though. I'd say the average southerner assumes that top-level sports (the manly ones, at least) are 70% southerner and the U.S. military is 85% southerner.
