In the meantime, teachers like Amy Owen are preparing to greet students on Monday after three weeks of winter vacation and then strike three days later. Ms. Owen, who has been teaching in Los Angeles public schools for more than a decade, said it has grown increasingly difficult to live near her school in central Los Angeles on her salary of about $72,000.

“Pretty much everyone at my age owns things, a home or a condo or something, and for me to get that I’d have to commute an hour and a half every day,” said Ms. Owen, 44. “If you looked at my salary just as a number I would be doing well in many places. But in L.A. I am just barely middle class. I understand that teaching is not a profession where you are going to make a lot of money, but we deserve some basic respect.”

I was totally off base brother. A day where you have none of your usual responsibilities and get to quietly "catch up", or mail it in attending meetings that require no preparation, absolutely should count as a work day.

"impossible to live anywhere on <300k" is whiny flame but a lot of what makes people feel strained is that half their paycheck goes to an unnecessary public sector bureaucracy of half-asleep dmv bitches who think they need to make 100k + a pension

the new deal basically killed america. this is no longer a country with a common set of interests and values, it's a cash redistribution mechanism with different classes of people fighting over the spoils and alternately getting their way every 4-8 years.

They are ignoring their pensions. Their real salary is more like $110k compared to a private sector salary without pension. They are also ignoring their 7 hours a day, 8.5 months a year schedule. Their pay is really more like $155k compared to a regular year round job.

Teacher is one of the best paid jobs anywhere.

This is nowhere close to true.

Even if she has great pension benefits and great medical benefits, she still only makes $72,000. She has to pay like 10.25% of that into CalSTRS, plus 1.45% to Medicare, in addition to her health insurance premiums and whatever income taxes she may owe. That reduces her cash flow heftily; likely more so than a private sector worker. The point here is that for someone in this income range, cash to pay for housing is a big deal and she’s not getting enough cash. So it’s not like a $110,000 salary. Not at all.

With respect to your claim about her pension affecting her retirement benefits, you have to remember that a career teacher will not normally be entitled to a SS retirement benefit, and even if they are through their spouse or other employment, the windfall elimination provision may apply to reduce those benefits. It’s not like these pension plans all work to make teachers rich as fuck when they retire.

Teachers also put in more than 7 hours per school day, but yes, they do work fewer work days than most employees.

is the contribution to calstrs an expense to her or just something that removes current expendable cash?

See how much you would have to contribute to a 401k or IRA annually to get the value of a teacher's pension. In many cases, it is 100% of salary for life after 30 years. You would have to save 30k++ a year if not more, depending on investment returns, to equal that pension. Also, these teachers are guaranteed sufficient returns without having to take any investment risk like the rest of us.

Teachers who are not entitled to social security benefits also don't have to make social security contributions of 6.2%. Thus, their salary is 6.2% higher. If your calstrs claim is right, then their effective contribution is more like 4% (after deducting SS contributions they don't have to make, but the rest of us do).

Your point about not paying into SS on the front end is well taken, yes, the net effect is that the teacher's contribution amount is reduced. My original point was that retards that salivate over teacher pensions do not tend to take into account the fact that a career teacher is probably not going to have a social security benefit. And, even if they do, based on their spouse or from some other career, they are subject to the windfall elimination provision. You don't address this point at all.

Second, your claim that a teacher gets 100% of salary after just 30 years is unfounded. A new teacher under CalSTRS could qualify for a maximum benefit of 2.4% per service year if they retire at 65. So, a career teacher who comes out of college, starts working at 23 and has a successful career and retires at 65, could have a 100% benefit but that's after 42 years of teaching. Additionally, that would be based on the teacher's highest 36 months. See:

http://www.calstrs.com/sites/main/files/file-attachments/mh2015_03_yourdefinedbenefitmembership.pdf

You also need to account for the fact that this benefit amount--after a 42 year teaching career--isn't going to be inflation adjusted. So assuming you have a teacher that lives to be 105, she's going to be earning a lot less at 105 than she did at 65.

Your point about teachers not taking investment risk is also off base. Any pension beneficiary is always at risk of the pension plan trying to get its benefit formulas changed and reductions in payouts of benefits.

These pension plans are not free money being doled out left and right to teachers. Teachers don't make a lot of money and even if they wind up having well-funded retirements, they earned it by teaching for all of those years.
