I'm a Moosemo I guess, but he really is a borderline case. Here are some Mussina factoids:

-Never won the Cy Young. Had seven top-five finishes. (Was runner-up once, in 1999; should have won it in 2001, when he finished fifth.)

-Never led the league in ERA, strikeouts, or WHIP. He led the league in wins once.

-Won 20 games only once (the last year of his career).

-Was nothing special in the postseason (7-8, 3.42).

-Spent much of his career among the top 20 pitchers in MLB, at times in the top 10, but was never regarded as a truly elite pitcher at any phase of his career.

He was sort of a rich man's Bert Blyleven, a very good pitcher who hung around, stayed healthy, and turned in solid seasons, year after year. Even with that effort, he only ended up with 270 wins. (To the poster who mentioned in the other thread that he played on bad Orioles teams-- this isn't really true. The Orioles in the mid-1990s were good. And all the Yankee teams he played on, except in 2008, made the playoffs.)

Meh, let’s move on to current pitchers hof chances. Top 10 by bwar.

Verlander - yes

Sabathia - yes

Kerahaw - yes

Greinke - yes, especially if he has a couple more good seasons

Hamels - no

Scherezer - yes, although would be interesting if he falls off cliff

King Félix - borderline - looks like he is done here, which won’t help his chances

Bartolo - no

Lester - no, but if pitches at level til 40 could get some traction.

Sale - on track for HOF

Degrom, Price, Kluber, Strasburg and Baumgarner could also be in the mix depending on how their careers go.

its crazy outside of Kershaw and Sabathia I have little idea who most of those faggots are. Back in the 90's I knew the name of almost every single MLB player. Isnt Verlander the guy who creampied Kate Upton's ass in doggy position. I think he deserves the HOF just for that

Yeah, didn’t realize Statsburg has only pitched 200 innings once - needs to step it up.

I want CC in because I don’t want to see articles for 10 years about whether he is being discriminated against for being a fat black alcoholic.

Hamels also has a better case than I realized; he had a decent 2018 (I missed it because it was split between two teams), so he might also put himself in the mix if he lasts to 40.

Morris just knew how to pitch well when people were watching. A no-hitter in a national TV game to open the '84 season. Two CG wins in the '84 WS. Three consecutive CG shutouts in '86, and would've won the Cy if Clemens hadn't gone berzerk. The '91 WS 10 inning game. Etc.

He's also a classic example of someone who didn't get in initially because "ooo he's a meanie to jocksniffing writers" and I'm sympathetic to that to a certain extent.

Didn't he have a ridiculous number of wins? I vaguely recall noticing that he would always be among the league leaders in wins but nowhere to be found on ERA.

Edit: not as pronounced as I thought. Only two 20 win seasons but a bunch more of 17-18 wins.

He had 11 seasons in the AL top 10 in WAR for pitchers. He was basically a top 5-20 pitcher in baseball every year for ~15 years.

To put that in perspective:

- Ken Griffey Jr had 6 years in the top 10 of WAR for position players

- Derek JEter had 4 years

No, it's a fair comparison. Teams have 25-man rosters, and usually 12 or 13 of those are pitchers.

Definitely not. The 4th best starter on a team plays as often as the ace. The second string shortstop rides the bench. Every roster has about an equal split bewtween pitchers and position players. Being a top 10 pitcher (starter or reliever) is like being a top 10 non-pitcher player, not a top 10 player at any one of 8 positions.

But if you want to compare total WAR (position players & pitchers combined and measured against each other): Griffey had 6 top 10s, Mussina 5 top 10s, Jeter 4 top 10s.

4th best starter almost certainly does not get as many IP as the ace, for a number of reasons. also even in the best case for your analogy, teams have five SP (and SP is the only pitcher reasonably likely to amass WAR in any significant amount), whereas all teams have 8 regular position players. Not a good analogy.

But if you want me to agree Jeter shouldnt be in the hall, sign me up

My point was that every team has 4-5 "every day players" at the pitcher position (and arguably 7-9 if you count relievers racking up typical reliever innings) and about 1.1 for every other position. So saying being a top 10 pitcher in the AL is the equivalent of being a top 10 SS in the AL is silly. The more apt comparison is to being a top 10 position player (although maybe not a perfect one). Saying a pitcher shouldn't get in because he was never the best in any given year, only top ~10 in MLB for most of 15 years is crazy, because hitters aren't held to that standard.

The hall has always had 2 types of players.

You have the inner-hall type guys like Mays, Aaron, Ruth, Maddux, Seaver, Randy Johnson, Mickey Mantle, etc.

Then you have the outer-hall type guys like Jeff Bagwell, Tom Glavine, Robin Yount, Lou Brock, Roberto Alomar, Barry Larkin, Willie Stargell, Ryne Sandberg, hell even Nolan Ryan imo is outer hall.

Max ballot makes sense with Clemens/Bonds wasting space. Jeter is only first ballot guy for next two years, so should ease the pain.

My take is that they will let in Jeter and maybe Walker next year (along with the Veterans committe guys - maybe Dale Murphy and/or Lou Whitaker), then let in the bad boys in 2021 (Bonds, Clemens, Schilling). How A-Rod is dealt with in 2022 will be interesting - current line seems to drawn at no to guys who were suspended.

I can't understand how everyone routinely underrates players who are close to the top for 15 years.

Mussina was one of the top starters in the league for 15 years. that as just as elite as someone who has 5 "transcendent" years and then some more average ones. people really underestimate how tough it is to be very very good over a long period of time. being very very good for 15 year IS elite, whether you like it or not.

as i've said before, in some respects a guy who is consistently very good is actually probably a more valuable player than a Cy Young level guy who plays at that level for 5 years and then drops off. it's extraordinarily beneficial for a team and a GM to rely on those very good guys, and you can structure your team around them. the stars who burn brighter for less time often lead to bad contracts and dead weight that causes a team to struggle.

Many guys in the hall were never more than consistent top 10-20ish players or pitchers, including first ballot guys like Vlad, Chipper, Jeter, Thome, Glavine, Smoltz. Check out how many times any of these guys was the best pitcher in his league (by WAR, FIP, or ERA+) or the best position player (WAR) or hitter in his league (OPS+).

I'd probably give Schilling a slight edge on Mussina for his career (more of a power pitcher/a bit more dominant, more post season success) vs Mussina's extra 55 wins.

here's the thing: defend the '92 and '01 cy young votes

also Ks are overrated. would rather my starter use his defense and get 3 outs throwing 10 pitches via weak grounders and soft pop ups than firing 20+ pitches to stikeout the side. moose was extremely effective at pitching to soft contact and an efficient innings eater, an underrated stat.

was also the maddux of the AL at fielding his position: 7x gg

Lol, the 1992 vote was a joke. It was sort of an achievement award for Eckersley, who perhaps should’ve won it in 1990. But if anyone else should’ve won, it was Clemens, not Mussina. Lol @ Mussina’s tiny pink 130 Ks in 240 IP— it really was a different time.

Mussina had a very good claim in 2001, and arguably should’ve won.

The first World Series that I really followed closely was the 1991 WS (which actually may be the greatest WS of all time). Game 6 was epic-- Puckett climbing over the fence to steal a homer in extra innings, then winning it with a walk-off.

right. and it's hard imo to make an argument AGAINST Puckett for not having an MVP. that was clearly and MVP-caliber season, and the voters got it wrong.

cr.

also, things like the CYA and the MVP are also largely dependent on your competition that year.

for me the question is whether a player had 1 or more seasons that were CYA or MVP level. If the answer is yes, then that counts for me.

imo 2, and that's not counting the season where he finished 2nd.

also imo, Glavine and Smoltz had 1-2 such seasons, and Schilling had 3-4

If Jack Morris is in the HOF, David Cone should be. But fuck Curt Schilling.

Wait so no one in this whole thread mentioned that Mussina played basically his whole career in the steroid era and clearly wasn’t on roids (HGH maybe)? The fact that the PED context greatly favored hitters makes his ERA and strikeout numbers considerably more impressive.
