it's never cheap but you can bring the average cost per day down if you ski at least 10-20 days (ski pass, ski share etc.) but you're still talking about reducing $200-400 per day down to $80-120 a day

do you stay at the mountain? drive in every day? eat at the resort?

my point is that unless you live at the base of a ski resort and only eat home cooked meals, the ski pass plus lodging/dining expenses rapidly add up. buying a season pass/renting a share or a ski cabin can bring those costs down but it's still a lot more than a hobby like running or hiking.

well yes if you define "skiing" as "I must take my family to Aspen or Chamonix for two weeks and we must stay in our own private villa with an instructor and five star dining apres" which it appears some of you are trying to do.

there are plenty of ski resorts on the east coast that are day trips from the cities that you can do a lift ticket and rentals for $100-$150 a day for an adult. obviously less for kids and obviously less if you own your own stuff.

it's 2 degrees global average temperature, not everything just shifts up 2 degrees

a core part of climate change is the *std deviation* is going to increase, which is less like "today is 60, so it'll be 62 in the future" and more like "this week was 60, 62, 60, 62, 60, 62, averaging out to be 61, but it'll be 72, 52, 72, 52, 72, 52, averaging out to be 62"

which is why the solution isn't "just do farm 1 degree further north" bc the growing seasons are going to be more erratic and it's going to be harder to produce a crop when a normal above-freezing season is going to be half below-freezing, destroying the ground crops

If you're worried about this then you shouldn't be going to Aspen. Go ski Winter Park or a million other great Colorado resorts without the name brand recognition. Hell, Loveland is one of my favorite resorts and some of the best skiing I've had in my entire life has been there despite it being a) cheap and b) basically a resort for locals.

It gets exponentially more expensive once you have children. I just bought ski clothing for my 3 year old and it’ll last him 2 seasons tops. Factor in rentals and lessons and you’re running about $200/day for one child alone.

We get the mountain collective pass every year so save a bunch on lift tickets but plenty of people are shelling out $150/day for lift tickets for a family of 4-5 people.

This is silly.

1. It is cheap for locals

2. If you ski a bunch, you can get season passes for reasonable amounts

3. Super expensive places like Aspen aren't necessary for people that just want to ski. Plenty of places are far cheaper and have specials midweek and such

4. There are college specials, old people's specials, etc.

If you really love to ski and don't have money you get a season pass for a local hill.

I think you are looking at it wrong. The question isn't whether non-rich people in Atlanta or Indianapolis or whatever pay to go skiing. It is whether there are enough locals + people willing to fly out to support the ski resorts that are currently open. The answer is "yeah, definitely."

Also, for kids learning to ski, the 300' vertical drop local hill is fine. I remember going to these as a kid at my school's ski club and had a blast.

To me, skiing is not fun enough to justify the expense or effort. Plus once you're over 25 there is just an enormous injury risk that probably isn't worth taking.

But I think this prediction is pretty dumb. Skiing is very Instagramable, so shrews will continue to do it.

It sounds like you're an idiot, but I know a lot of people who were very good skiers but then in their 40s just took a bad turn and tore up their knee. Your body just isn't really meant to be turning at 40 mph at a certain age.

You're an idiot.

You're not even supposed to be "turning" when skiing (other than racers who need to combine pivots with carves), unless you're going like 10mph at which point you're not injuring yourself.

You just put your skis on edge, flex your legs and ride the carve. Very hard to get injured if you know how to ski.

30+ years of skiing and never injured. I don't know anyone who got injured in my years of skiing other than: racers, idiot beginners who tried to do a black run, drinking + skiing, and freestyle mos who hurt themselves doing jumps.

I live in MFH and am the definition of an intermediate skier. Not sure whether or not I agree with OP but here's some info:

I've taken the ski bus twice this season. $95 gets you a ride both ways from downtown and a lift ticket.

I also have another trip planned on East Coast. I'll be staying at a friend's parent's place so it'll prob be ~$350pp for me and gf.

Also have another trip to UT planned in March for me and gf. I was blown away by how LITTLE it's going to cost. All in will be ~$1300 for me and gf.

I think the key is to 1) have friends who are locals 2) own your skies and equipment and 3) Not get sucked into the resort shit.

I am getting two three-day weekend trips and two day trips this season and will be spending like $1200.

$300 lift tix (this was biggest surprise)

$200 air bnb for two nights (nights in the ends will be with good friend in SLC)

$250 for food

I think the big difference is we are going to SKI, not to shrew out. Idk like I said above, it's a huge advantage to have friends who are locals. I was blown away by how little this trip cost to book

it's not like there will be no snow at all, but it won't be reliable enough for long seasons and snowmaking cuts into resort profitability so they'll lose money

Have you ever been to the alps lol.

My last time skiing in the alps last year there was so much snow that they had to close huge sections of the mountains for avalance risk and I was borderline stranded because there was so much massive snowfall that my skis would constantly get stuck and I couldn't move. I had to take my skis off and walk like 1km carrying all my gear down to the next lift to get back down.

The French alps were crazy good last year when I was there. I was in Austria the year before in early December and it was also fine.

The greatest variability in the snow I've noticed is that in the early/late season, the snow melts and freezes over night, meaning the snow is shit during the morning but gets better in the afternoon. But I prefer to get my skiing done in the morning so I have all afternoon/evening to do be drunk and do other stuff.

You're absolutely right - lack of snow in November is devastating.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9KgeHKo3o4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asVxx7pbbas

I totally get that you can get screwed trying to ski in early December out west, but the alps are just a different beast. The high end resorts are so high up (even Chamonix is like 1,000M altitude and that's on the low-end, you have places that are 2,000M or higher) that you get reliable snow very early and very late in the season. The Euro ski racing season starts in like October.

But in all seriousness, I do most of my alpine skiing in early December/late November when it's a lot cheaper. There's plenty of snow and all the pistes are open at this time. The only downside is, you don't really have much powder, and the snow cam be pretty crap in lower areas (hard and icy because it melts and refreezes overnight), although everything still will be covered in snow, it's just not the "good" snow.

It’s gotten way worse in the last 5 years. Rich people have been skiing in fancy resorts for almost a century but the Asians and instagram have taken it to another level. This also means places like Aspen have become a lot less exclusive and are just cash cows for Big Travel. The great irony of the Nutella mindset is that anything she’s into loses real status by virtue of her pursuing it.

What is this "private ski clubs" you speak of?

You don't need a membership to ski at the best mountains in the world and there are no "private only zones" at these mountains, partly because in most of these places a company doesn't actually own the mountain, they merely have the right to operate the lifts and maybe provide ski patrol services.

No there isn't. What you're referring to are those lame "private" resorts (more like lodges). They may or may not have their own "private" crap section of the mountain cordoned off or their own "private" shit 2 person lift off the side of the mountain, but there is no way they have "private" access to the main ski areas at places like Vail.

Helicopter skiing is something anyone can do as long as you pay. There is nothing private about it at all. And heli skiing has been huge among the big spender crowd since at least the early 2000s. And it's not nearly as expensive as people think it is.

This is CR. Even at the big fancy mountains, there are many cheap options for lodging and food if you're willing to deal with a few minor inconveniences.

I don't get east coast types who fly out west. Much better off just flying to Europe if you're going to spend that much $$$. You can get great deals on flights, and lifts are generally under $100 a day and you can find lodging for much less than what Aspen charges you.

Part of the problem is for a lot of people a trip to Aspen or Vail is like their "once in a lifetime trip" so they'll blow through their money without cutting any corners, which raises prices for everyone. At least in Europe, skiing is a very common pasttime for a large portion of the population so prices can't go up without pissing everyone off. Less than $100 for a day pass in the alps!

On No-Nonsense New Hampshire Slopes

By BILL PENNINGTONFEB. 5, 2009

Wildcat has steep and expert trails, a good test for skiers or riders. Brian Post for The New York Times

IT is a subtle realization on the final five minutes of the drive to the venerable Wildcat Mountain in New Hampshire: Something is missing. Actually, lots of things are missing.

There are no houses, hotels, restaurants, gas stations, banks, shops, traffic lights or billboards. Just miles of tree-lined hills. Finally, there is a sign for the ski area, a parking lot and a lodge.

And that’s about it. Carved into a peak in the White Mountain National Forest 76 years ago, Wildcat is a ski area in a preserve. If not for the fast lifts and snowmaking guns, you could say it is a ski area in a time capsule.

“We don’t have a lot of people looking for cell service or a Wi-Fi connection,” said Tom Caughey, Wildcat’s general manager, who first worked at the resort as a teenager. “People come here, put their boots on and go skiing on trails hand-cut by the Civilian Conservation Corps with an understanding for the natural flow of the mountain.

“And our busiest day is a crowd equal to the slowest day at other mountains.”

A ski trip to the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire can be many things, including sophisticated dining and elegant lodging in a quintessential New England village down the road. The region also has outlet shopping, festivals and art shows.

But a journey to the soul of New Hampshire skiing means visiting its oldest and most iconic mountains, places like Wildcat, the first Eastern ski area on federal Forest Service land, or the nearby state-owned Cannon Mountain in Franconia, which in 1967 hosted the first World Cup ski races in North America.

These areas have served up three-quarters of a century of American skiing and don’t bend toward trends. They are idiosyncratic, even anomalous, places, so far from the industry bustle that you can ski 100,000 vertical feet in a single day.

They are big, tough mountains. They have enough soft edges to have trained hundreds of thousands of children to ski and ride, but they reflect New Hampshire customs and a New Hampshire ethos. People outside Northern New England always think of Vermont and New Hampshire as one place, like sibling states. On a map, they look similar — inverted images of one another, like interlocking bookends.

In truth, as anyone from either state will tell you, they could not be more different. And that’s instantly recognizable when you cross the border between the states, the Connecticut River. Consider it the Checkpoint Charlie of Northern New England.

Heading west into Vermont, the landscape turns from industrial to rural. Heading east into New Hampshire, the politics turn from environmentally and fiscally liberal to determinedly conservative and frugal.

These cultural realities are important to enjoying a winter trip to northern New Hampshire. While Vermont skiing can be like a soft-focus Christmas card scene, New Hampshire’s best mountains are rugged and a bit thorny. They are unadorned and practical.

But they pack a thrilling and thorough alpine adventure. Wildcat and Cannon, for example, have long been known for their steep and expert trails, and there’s little question that any intermediate or better skier or rider should venture to both mountains to test their skills. They won’t baby you, and they are full of not-so-secret backcountry stashes when you tire of the sanctioned trails.

Still, challenge is not the entire reason to see these historic ski areas at least once. The no-nonsense New Hampshire approach also means ski areas left in a natural setting. The view from the 4,062-foot summit of Wildcat Mountain, an eye-level vista of Mount Washington and Tuckerman’s Ravine, is consistently voted among the most scenic in all North American ski resorts by readers of Ski magazine. There is also no on-site lodging at either Wildcat or Cannon, which gives both places a parklike landscape.

While these mountains will not baby you, they need not intimidate. As with nearly any mountain, most of the terrain is rated for beginners and intermediates.

“We’re not an extreme skiing area,” Mr. Caughey said.

In fact, Wildcat’s best trail might be Lynx, a blue square intermediate. It rolls, winds and plunges 2,100 feet from top to bottom.

Cannon, meanwhile, takes pride in being a vacation from the resort experience, and has verifiable contrarian roots: It was home mountain of the champion skier Bode Miller, who skied to his own drummer. Cannon is also where the sight of dogs walking through the lodge doesn’t turn a head. It’s where a junior racer waited in a lift line next to his grandfather, who was dressed in a full-length, zipped, tan Carhartt work suit. It’s where the lodge has a brown-bag basement, but in fact, people all over the lodge are unwrapping sandwiches made at home.

Just as there are no fashion police at Cannon, there is no one discouraging the cost-effective brown-bagging tradition, something prohibited at many ski resorts. Cannon’s general manager, John DeVivo, admits that his children brown-bag it, too.

“We preach value and a mountain in its natural state,” Mr. DeVivo said. “You can’t force people to do something in that setting. Half of our product is the snow and trails — what you’re skiing and riding on. The other half of our product is invisible. It’s what you don’t see — you don’t see a McDonald’s or a holistic health spa.”

You also won’t see many New Yorkers at Cannon and Wildcat. The northern New Hampshire skiing populace is a mix of in-staters, those few who have wandered over from Maine or ventured up from Rhode Island, and lots of people from eastern Massachusetts.

If you make your base the beautiful village of Jackson, you are 10 minutes from Wildcat and about an hour from Cannon. Ski areas like Attitash and Bretton Woods are also nearby, down winding roads dotted with private ski clubhouses and roadhouse bars with signs welcoming “skiers, small fries and motorcycles.”

Just two miles out of Jackson is Black Mountain, a small, hidden jewel. At Black, you can park within 50 yards of the lodge, won’t be fighting lift lines and your descent will be unhurried and undisturbed. Like a lot of New Hampshire skiing, it’s an informal small-mountain experience in a big-mountain setting.

These aren’t classic destination resorts, the all-inclusive ski areas with slopeside hotels and amenities. But there is a natural, straightforward and plainspoken appeal. And there’s nothing wrong with doing your skiing on the mountain, then spending the rest of your day in a thriving, old New England village.

In Jackson, there are art galleries, antiques shops, a large ski touring center, stores and restaurants. For lodging right in the heart of everything, the elegant Wentworth Inn, a village fixture since the mid-19th century, has an Old World feel. And its dining room has imaginative and artfully prepared entrees like Gulf of Maine lobster and Vermont goat cheese cannelloni (in New Hampshire they don’t mind borrowing from their neighbors), with baby greens, leeks, tomato confit and a white wine reduction ($28).

The drive to the White Mountains of New Hampshire might be a little farther than some people want to go, and it might be a little less scenic — until the final stage. But once inside the national forest, it’s about the pristine landscape. As you drive through the quiet of the mountains, it is then that you realize nothing is missing.

it's gotten annoyingly expensive. A day pass at a shitty mountain like Mountain Creek is now $80. Any decent New England mountain and it's like $120 and more if you go out west. Plus all the gear and overpriced chicken fingers, and it just becomes not worth it especially for people with lots of kids. I used to love snowboarding but it just feels too expensive now and more of a hassle than it's worth.

You’re right though even shitty mountains are expensive. We go to mountain high which is closest place and window rate is $89 ($80 discounted if you buy in advance). Group lessons for kids are $160. But it’s still 50% cheaper than any real resort so better for kids to learn there than at mammoth or even big bear.

5 is the right age. 4 is a little young if they don’t show the interest but younger sibling may be motivated seeing older one do it. Kids who do it very young (2-3) generally live right by a slope such that their parents can take them all the time. At 3-4, they still have trouble maintaining the pizza and you can get an edge wedge on amazon to help out.

I made the mistake of doing swim lessons at 3 and after lots of money and tears, he’s finally kind of swimming like 10 feet. Could’ve spared everybody by just starting at 4 and getting to the same level faster and cheaper.

There is no "right age" unless you're desperately trying to turn them into a ski racer.

Genetics and natural athleticism play a huge role in how quickly kids are able to learn to ski.

But for the average child with crap genes, they'll lack the balance and strength to even form a pizza properly and learn all sorts of really bad habits that will literally take years to undo. The biggest thing that keeps intermediate skiers from progressing is their utter inability to use their inside ski edge, thus forming perpetual a-frames that limits their ability to carve on steep or icy terrain. This is because of the overemphasis on learning from the "pizza" at an early age, which emphasizes exclusively the use of only the outside leg. And then it will take at least 2-3 years of concerted effort to retrain them to ski using their inside leg.

Thus the goal is to minimize the pizza phase for kids as much as possible and get onto parallel quickly so they don't learn the bad habits, and quickly adapt to using both legs instead of just the outer leg. But most kids are too weak and clumsy so they spend months if not entire seasons on pizza which is counterproductive. And young kids who can't pick things up naturally are also too young to really understand the specific instructions given by the adults/instructor so you end up with kids learning bad habits. It's just a terrible cycle that could have been avoided if you simply waited until they were 7 or 8 to teach them to ski.

The whole mantra of "earlier the better" for kids' activities is only true if your kid is like in the 99th percentile of natural talent and you need every advantage to turn them into a world class talent, or at least good enough to get a scholarship to college. For the rest, it's just misery and will do more harm than good.

I think you are probably wrong about this one. if kids are anything, they are adaptable. i'd think that if you get a kid out on the slopes at age 5 instead of 7, the chances that the kid develops debilitating bad habits is probably zero especially if the plan is to do a decent amount of skiing each season.

I don't think there is a particular advantage to a kid learning to ski at 5 instead of 7 aside from the joy of learning a new fun activity, but the idea that it is harmful seems a little silly.

It's not silly - there is a reason why you see so many teenagers and adults who have good balance and clearly are competent skiers, but skiing with massive a-frames and they struggle massively on bumps, ice, steeps and moguls, despite having skied for years.

The biomechanics of most run of the mill ski instruction relies on beginning all skiers on the snowplough, and learning to turn through the use of pivoting and weighting the outside leg. They then move on to some variation of a stem-Christie turn, which was developed in like the 1960s when skis were long and not shaped.

With so much emphasis on learning to turn using the outside leg, the inside leg just kid of sits there unused other than as a balancing device, when in fact the inside leg is what should be used to initiate the turn in the first place. In other words, the way you should be skiing is completely the exact opposite of how you spend your formative years learning.

This is a commonly known problem among the ski instructor and racing crowd by the way:

https://www.quora.com/If-parallel-skiing-is-a-goal-why-waste-time-on-skiing-snowplough

As you can see, most people are talking about getting away from the snowplough as quickly as possible, but this requires balance and strength. Most young kids (5 or younger) lack the balance and strength so they linger on snowplough far too long. So then once they get older and strong enough, they have to spend literally years practicing initiating turns using the inside ski, which requires an entirely different transition and biomechanics than a traditional outside-ski dominated transition.

Disclaimer: I am in the Harold Harb school of thought so my views obviously go against whatever the Professional Ski Instruction Association is teaching or licensing.

You're on XO. I'm 99.999th percentile athletic and my wife is 99th. I think our kid will be jumping 30 foot cliffs by age 5.

Yeah free lift ticket but $200 for the day at ski school. Alternatively you can have a great day on the slopes shredding with your 3 year old.
