So we’re not factoring in 1/4 of the compensation and we’re not factoring in one of the major savings vehicles?

The overwhelming majority of my “savings” as a biglaw senior associate is the 401k hits out of the paycheck until they hit the limit, then big checks to my kids’ 529s and a rainy day savings account when the bonus hits.

So I guess by your hypo I’m not “saving” much at all, lol

Or just put all your expenses for the year on credit cards, don’t pay them off and watch all your “savings” add up in your bank account. One weird trick to save $10k a month.

if you're in a high tax state (i.e., 80%+ of big lawyers), 250K = 125K after tax, ss, 401k, etc., right?

125K/12 = a little over 10K a month.

2-3K on rent.

1-2K on food.

1K on car or other shit.

I think 2-3K a month savings is reasonable.

if they start upping the spring bonuses again, you could really make bank. last year the most senior associates made 125k on bonuses all in.

strategy:

do enough useful shit to put on your reviews, then maximize easy billing opportunities like doc review, diligence, other easy bullshit. as long as you have hours + enough crap to cite to on your reviews you are fine. it's the best strategy for not burning out or starting a drug habit.

partners don't like midlevels doing doc review or diligence. the more senior you get, the harder the work gets IMO and the more stressful.

if it's a big enough case you can get away with it more. plus midlevel isn't THAT senior that a client would scoff at it.

$3500 daycare bill and $2500 mortgage plus getting pwnd by being a partner but not having my pay materially increased is killing me.

i wish. my firm went to a model a few years ago where everyone has some equity component to their pay. my share is 10%. what this really means is I get to pay in, I don't necessary get an increase every year, and I have to pay taxes in a bunch of fucking states.

my understanding is that when there were nonequity partners, they actually got decent increases - then after two years they were eligible to be equity at 100%.

Take home? I'm honestly not sure yet this year because of tax bullshit and I haven't been a partner long so I'm crap at figuring this all out. I also hate my accountant and I'm about to fire them. Our taxes from last year were just filed in October. Last year our combined take home was about but not quite $600k. My pretax went up 350k this year because I brought in a nice case but that's probably an anomaly.
